Ferrari Movie / Michael Mann Moving Forward

It looks like the Michael Mann / Ferrari movie is moving forward. This article points they have signed Adam Driver as Enzo, Penelope Cruz as his wife and Shailene Woodley as Lina (Piero's mom). This is obviously focused on earlier life. Filming starts later this year.

I am a sucker for a Michael Mann movie. I like how he films and stories don't necessarily wind up "happy" as Miami Vice TV & Movie, Public Enemies, Collateral, Heat, etc.

I did not read the Enzo book that came out a couple years ago so I do not have any point of reference aside for the stories I've heard over my lifetime in our little bubble. He strikes me as a person who was possibly hurting inside - perhaps from his youth, war and loss of one of his sons while managing an odd relationship with his other.

It doesn't seem like some "feel good" movie but I bet it will be pretty good.

I have mixed feelings about it. I don't like the cashing in on the Ferrari name/brand. On the other hand if it helps spread the myth and joy of Ferrari then I suppose its okay.

 

Happiness doesn't come in a bottle. As long as it is true to who Ferrari was, I wil enjoy the film. If it is like the crapfest about Ford/Ferrari film recently, then I will forgo poor acting, bad storylines and bs CGI.

Stick to facts, not interpretations!

Mann has been working on this project since the 90s, so I guess he's going to make something ambitious. Or at least try it.

 

I'm hoping for "best soundtrack ever."

 

Sadly... For people to stomach it... It will likely be interpretations. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.

I had to look at the ford vs Ferrari movie with a different lense. Entertainment and that it brought what is a nerdy car guy culture of clash of the Titans from behind the curtain and mainstream. Audiences loved it. I hoped it would plow the way for more auto history films....and of course more accurate ones.


At least it wasn't as bad as fast and furious movies were for that car culture. I mean it was so bad... It became a classic. Lol.

 

I hope they dont use ****ing Hollywood built replicas that look like **** (Ford vs Ferrari).

 

I hope they don't do the stupid italian accents like in House of Gucci....

 

You are probably correct. Ferrari was not a kind man. But in building a company, a car and a legacy, one does not bow to the opinions or standards of other. Hence why his cars are prized possessions to those of similar values.

 

Looking forward to ANYTHING Michael Mann does, Adding Ferrari only makes it more exciting.

 

Last Of The Mohicans and Blackhat are his only misses. Everything else is pretty golden.

He earned Will Smith an Oscar, but he got robbed. ROBBED! (Training Day was pretty dope tho).

 

Last of the Mohicans was not bad at all, IMO. It´s just that it´s not like anything he´s done after.

I´d put The Keep in the "miss" list instead.

 

I love the Keep, very unusual film, I had to dig deep a couple of years ago to find it online, great to see it again.

 

To be honest, I enjoyed it too, despite it´s shortcomings.

It´s what I call a "failed" movie. It´s not good as a whole but it has many interesting elements.

 

My dad loved last of the mohicans. I never watched it but I remember some people raving about it.

 

In my opinion the only way to do a meaningful “biopic” on virtually any prominent individual, is not to do a theatrical production, but a really well researched, well produced, honest documentary. So, to the people who frequent this web site and people like us, just about any dramatization of Enzo Ferrari’s life is going to be a disappointment.

 

It's one of the most racist modern movies ever made.

Now look, I get it. I get that the demographics of this board are less than empathetic toward non-whites and that there are rules about P&R, so I won't get too deep into it.

But Last Of The Mohicans is racist as holy hell.

This will be my one and only post on the subject.

 

Actually the pattern is that whatever field someone is knowledgeable about-be it cars art, nature, history, any given profession be it soprano or medical examiner if they watch a movie focused on that field they will find it "off" not quite right or very wrong. That is the case for a huge majority of films, for various reasons.

That is why I have learned to appreciate certain aspects of each film.

In Le Mans 66/Ford versus Ferrari some were up in arms about the Ferraris being incorrect: it is a movie for the general public, utterly irrelevant.
What was beautiful about it was the acting, the human side; when Miles explains to his young son the perfect lap that was pure old fashioned cinema magic: fabulous because the general public can then relate. Later in the movie when he is going flat out at Le Mans faster than anyone and his son by the radio in California says "The perfect lap." anyone in the audience, even the most clueless about racing, get exactly what is meant and is caught in the magic of the moment. THAT is priceless.

That film has done a LOT for motorsport just like drive to survive (which I have never watch as it does not appeal to me at all but I appreciate how it has drawn in vast new audiences for F1 and racing, cf the amazing crowds at COTA for the USGP last fall.

Rush had racing scenes that were all wrong but the acting was fantastic (and I loooved Olivia Wilde in it!)

Bobby Deerfield was a poor racing movie but a very poignant and sadly beautiful story of a man who risks his life having an affair with a woman doomed by her health.

Le Mans has zero plot because McQueen could not control the making of the film and production was chaotic...but as a documentary of those years it is fantastic.

So each can -not always- have an element of interest.

 

How dare you leave out the grocery fight.

It was the best scene in the whole movie!

 

I'll have to rewatch it. I hadn't seen it in 20 years so probably I can only remember the good things. But I'm pretty sure I've seen movies more racist than this.

 

Had F vs F been a work of fiction I might have enjoyed it more. A couple of the scenes were laughable and didn’t even have much dramatic effect. They could have been left out, but they were dramatic in concept so I guess that’s why they were in the movie.

I appreciate your perspective but you may have missed my main premise: That biography and history depicted in film are typically going to be more authentic…if not more entertaining…if presented as documentaries rather than as dramas. As an example, do you think Senna would have been as powerful if it had been actors reciting a script and racing scenes with fake cars, drivers glancing over at each other and sneering (one of my “favorite” dramatic devices). And yes, I recognize the weaknesses in the Senna production as a bit of a hagiography….especially to dedicated Prost fans. But most people viewing that film probably recognize that, too, and adjust for it.

As much as I wanted to see a film made about Phil Hill, in retrospect I’m glad that Hollywood never got its hands on it, for some of the reasons cited above. Hollywood rarely does well with introspective, thoughtful characters.

 

It's been years since I've seen it. I remember it was well crafted. I also did see racism in it, just the opposite of what @Golden Steed may have seen.

Specifically the genocide of Indigenous people. I mean the title is literally "Last of the Mohicans."

I was curious about @Golden Steed critique, so read about it more, it appears the consternation is people somehow gathered the native folks 'deserved' their fate or somehow were the cause of their own demise. The book does have this romanticized perverted view.

The movie, however? Let's just say, I didn't come out of the theater concluding Daniel Day-Lewis or Chingachgook as villains and all the Europeans, heroes. Quite the contrary.

Reminds me of folks that hate Dances with Wolves for the same reason.


Remember, when everything is racist, then nothing is racist.
