That’s pretty much exactly the way I used to go Adelaide - Cairns when Chloe was working there. First night Cobar or Bourke. Second night Emerald. The dirt bit was fine in my old Golf but last time I did it was two or three years ago. It does save quite a few kms.

I do the length of M2 and M7 and then back again every day. Then add weekends using the Lane Cove tunnel, Bridge etc and it all adds up. It’s just part of the cost of living in Sydney these days. I could take non toll roads but as you’d know it’d just double or more the time I spend on the road. My time is worth more than that, so it is what it is and not worth thinking about
It's about 30-35klm and I've done it in the 535 Beema and a 2wd courier ute as well as a Landcruiser towing a car trailer and maintained about 70-80kph. After the dirt there's quite a nice section beside a creek/irrigation channel,at the end of that bit is a nice pull off('sigh' not that sort!) for a bit of a breather/picnic. There's fiok all at Aramac but historic Barcaldine is only about 60ish down the road. Great pubs all the way and the speed turns to 110 in some places. One really interesting stop is the Angellala creek south off Charleville where a semi blew up. Heroics everywhere when it happened,here's a link. Large pulloff(yep again) area and lots of interpretive stuff...take a picnic for that one,the existing rail damage is still there to guage the huge blast: You've gotta take your map books with a grain of salt re showing the dirt bits. If I'm going down a new route/root,I always phone the most local as they're the folk who travel the most,you could also phone the local council.
Following your route on my mapping book and all makes sense to go that way , as I'll have done the coast road up from SSC. and another trip this year I'm doing Melbourne around the coast to Merimbula .
Ok well rules are,Don't drive after about 4.30pm..'roos. There are 'roos,emu's and goats on the road at different /same times. 'roos are always the worst,emu's are dumb as dogpoo and goats are afraid of vehicles. Unless they've all been caught,you'll be amazed at the number of 'em,so much so that they're now valuable enough to be caught and farmed.
No. Even when I use rentals, I rarely turn on the aircon (and yes it annoys the hell out of me the odd noise distortions you get with open windows on cars that are designed for aircon). I don’t own a ‘normal’ car (308 and vintage 500); I use rentals for anything that I don’t want to use one of those for; which occasions are getting fewer and fewer...
As much as i enjoy night driving ,its not what i do these days unless i know the roads and traps ta for the tips all noted ..
The saving grace is I’m driving against the traffic every day. There are punters heading the other way every morning, stuck in massive queues and paying the same as me
Tell me about it. Not too bad if you're sharing the driving and company, but on your own (with two dogs you have to find accommodation for in the same room) pretty hard work. Adelaide - Cairns is re 3300km, so 1100km per day average. The car? Nothing exciting. That was my original Golf wagon. Boggo spec. I only bought it as I knew I'd be driving a lot while Chloe was in Cairns. Ended up doing over 60,000km in it in two years. Cairns four times, Pt. Macquarie, all around Tassie (after the 355 ****ed up and wasn't worth the risk taking it there) and God knows where else. Bloody good car, actually. I was so impressed I got rid of it for the R when I no longer needed to do the long trips. Saved myself a lot of money as I was going to buy a 330-340i or similar. Mileage was circa 5-6l / 100km.
