Mass damper was used to tune out the dynamic effects of the tires. This porpoising phenomenon may be related to suspension damping but most likely the contraction/expansion of the venturi tunnels is too aggressive so the flow in the tunnels is stalling. The cycle is: DF builds up, the car sinks down, the flow stalls, DF is lost, the car rises, the flow reattaches, DF is restored, the car drops down, etc. They either need to raise the spring rates, raise the ride height, or redesign the tunnels. That, or maybe they’re experimenting with how low they can set the car up. Maybe high fuel loads or too many sandbags.
I think it’s pretty clear they’re just blowing air out the back—without passing through a rad of any sort—to power the flow down the aggressive ramp at the back of the sidepods. Using the top of the pods as a turning vane. Looks like trying to be clever for the sake of being clever.
Alonso saying Renault/Alpine lost engine performance compared to last year. AFAIK all others have recovered to last years levels already...
Really appreciate your eye for the details of small things, and the rigs the teams use for calibration and data gathering. Don't really see these things anywhere else, and it adds to an appreciation of how the formula relies on technical teamwork in addition to driver performance. Thanks Joe!
Corinna will write a check for little Mick. How much for another go round the funfair for my dear little boy?!
Liberty will have to step up and subsidize the team for a season, while Haas looks for a buyer. Given the circumstances, the other teams will be fine with it.
BBC -Sebastian Vettel says the Russian Grand Prix should be cancelled - and he will not be there if the race goes ahead. The page selling tickets for the event has disappeared from the official F1 website, and one promoting the Turkish Grand Prix has appeared. This has led to speculation that the race will be cancelled and replaced by one at Turkey's Istanbul Park.
The track in Turkey is probably better than Sochi. A Russian GP may be off the calendar for many years to come.
Ferrari says the porpoising problem isn't an easy one to solve, and those teams that have sorted it quickly will have an advantage until others sort it. Bullish that, seeing that Ferrari and Mclaren are 2 teams that seem to have it mostly under control. Max says he's not bothered by it, Mercedes seemingly badly affected according to some trackside people. Don't give me hope, Ferrari!
Alpine apparently does not have it, meaning they run very stiff suspension set up but the car being run soooo stiff meant they were seen often blocking a front wheel under braking yesterday and this morning, no report of that this afternoon. It would only be poetic justice if Merc is on the backfoot.
They don't have cause they're too slow to create any suction.....the only thing sucking in that car is Alonso!
Interesting...I just read that Alpine is the worst affected of all? (apart from Alfa I guess, since they have barely done any running..) Fully agreed on the last bit, hehe. I forgot where I read that, sorry...
