You would be surprised to learn how many 308's had engine swaps in the day. Just one mechanic is Sydney was responsible for 4. I know of 2 other mechanics who replaced engines, because it was much cheaper than a rebuild. In the mid 80's 308's were 40K cars and a rebuild was half the value. 2nd hand engines were 10K.

Also remember that a carby 308 will happily rev well past it's redline. Get too much red mist at a track day, they will throw a rod, destroying block and crank.

The engine swap of this car is only well known because the original blew up in spectacular fashion at a Sandown FCA track day.

Most NSW registration documents record the engine type rather than the actual number (this was common with 246 and 365's as well) so owners can be blissfully unaware.

Engine mismatches are easily fixed these days, Ferrari are happy to sell a "classiche" block and then certify a car.
