Repainting a door sill is an afternoon job. There you go again turning a molehill into a mountain.

 

There’s more bubbles than just the door sills. I wouldn’t touch the car unless it was really cheap, but then again, you know what they say about cheap Ferraris…..

 

I would be willing to wager that every single bubble came from some kind of impact. It's not a big deal. Aluminum doesn't rust.

How would you have galvanic corrosion when there is no ferrous material in any of the spots where there is bubbling? It's simply moisture that got under the paint. Stop being dramatic. It's a 21 year old car and the paint (other than a few bubbles) is in fantastic shape.

I don't care if my cars are 99 point concours cars because I prefer to drive them. To me, that car is extremely clean, inside and out. As another user said, really making mountains out of molehills. It's simply moisture that got under the paint. Stop being dramatic. Do you actually know anything about aluminum?

Bubbles like you see here are 99.9% of the time caused by damage to the paint that allows moisture to get in. A small rock chip, knick from a dropped item (in the case of the door sills), etc. can allow moisture in and cause issues. The door sill design on these cars traps moisture, so the assertion that the car must have been parked at the beach/immersed in the Pacific Ocean its entire life is just ridiculous.

Don't know why you're being purposefully obtuse as door sills are absolutely a high wear/high traffic area of any car. There is a good chance you brush them every time you get in and out, they are easily dinged if you drop something out of your pocket when getting in and out of the car, etc.

All the red flags = bubbles in a common area + another on the hood from a rock chip?

I wish every car I looked at had "all the red flags" this one does. It's a 1 of 4-5 car in my favorite color. Stunning car.

 

Although aluminum doesn’t rust, it does corrode. You seem very obsessed about defending this car. I respect your opinion and your love of this 360, but there are a lot of people that are not going to touch a car with corrosion issues, myself included. Been there, done that. Paint work is a big deal for a lot of high end car owners. Here are a couple areas that support my opinion of why I wouldn’t buy this car at the current price point.

Don't have a dog in the fight one way or the other (except for my love of verde zeltweg). Just think the fear mongering over "aluminum corrosion" is overblown in this thread by people without a lot of materials science knowledge. Aluminum is not the same as iron/steel.

Raw aluminum naturally forms a protective, thin aluminum oxide layer that inhibits corrosion (and is harder than steel). When you see paint bubbling on aluminum, water has gotten under the clear/paint layers and has caused the otherwise raw aluminum to react with oxygen and form a protective oxide layer between the aluminum / paint interface. Unlike iron oxide (rust), this layer does not deepen through the metal.

The way to properly repair is to sand down to raw aluminum, use an acid etching to remove any residual oxide layer, then repaint and re-clear. The bubbling is unsightly but does not affect the structural integrity of the car (whereas with a car made from steel, it would be a significant issue if left long enough).

 

That is ALOT of corrosion. I bought a beater that has spent time outside.. but that's a but extreme IMHO. Alone itself it can be remedied, but as an indicator of overall care it's not a good sign.

 

Having been in aviation maintenance for over forty years I have a very good understanding of aluminum corrosion. One small spot of filiform corrosion wouldn’t be a huge concern to me but when you have multiple locations of corrosion, and understanding that once you start the corrosion removal process you’re almost always going to find more, makes it a car I’m not interested in. Especially when there are examples that don’t have this issue.

 

and it's at 125K already. some guys just don't care. i think it's a "gotta have it" car being a unicorn spec in the US.

 

I'm sorry, but aluminum absolutely DOES corrode. As AandSC stated, corrosion is common in the aviation world, and it is one of the biggest reasons to ground an aircraft. Saying "it's not the same as steel so it can't corrode" is just flat-out wrong.

 

I just looked at this 360 on the BaT site. In my opinion this car has many cosmetic problems. Bidding has already reached 125k. Not my kind of car!

I am also watching the Scaglietti from the gated collection. I have seen them listed for $350,000, however, it will be interesting to see what one actually sells for.

I can't tell from the listing, but seems like this could be a Canadian car and therefore, applies-to-apples comps may not apply. My initial impression is that it would have done better on BaT along with lower fees. Also picture quality is poor.

Another 360 (gated spider) at $146,000! Not sure there is a difference between Modenas and Spiders today. HUGE difference between the 430 gated and 360 gated. That will likely narrow over the longer term. Spider top maintenance is always going to be higher, I would think the Modena would sell higher on average.
