It would be fantastic if they really made a big step up and can contend for points again

I’d like to believe that but I still think HAM qualifies ahead of Russell. There, I said it, LOL.

Maybe not pole because I think (I hope, ha-ha) he hasn’t got the best car anymore but pretty sure he was behind Russell because they split the set-up work and HAM’s side went the wrong way.

Like I wrote in the first-time winner’s thread, I think they’ll be ahead of the AM guys. Though they might be bested by Bottas!

Thé thing is, it’s a loooooong season and as we saw last year, and maybe even more so this year, money and development could change the order significantly through the year.

Biggest take-away from today: the cars handle like the pigs they are (weight wise) and just look soooo slow and so NOT on edge compared to the cars of the 2000 decade.

One more example of messing with a good thing. Very sad.

If that happens, Gunther's residuals from Drive to Survive were well-spent on 2022 development

The increased weight compounded by the much firmer suspension! Obviously if they quell the porpoising they can tune the suspension better.

While it has been said in the forum that shaving 100 kgs could help the car to become lighter and hence agile. But then it got me thinking where can the weight be reduced? Tires, nope, due to aero reasons. Engine, maybe, but that wont be for this season.
Hope people shed more light on areas where this can be done.

no more excuses for Checo. He has the car…he should not be thinking about anything lower than P2-P3. He’s been there a year.

(It’s still early and we don’t know what programme he was running, but he needs to pull it together tomorrow).

There’s that also—in fact, I was looking forward to seeing the jiggling from the stiff suspension—but I was referring to how slow they look through the slow corners. At one point, with Brundle reporting from trackside, cars going by looked like they were cruising back to the pits but in fact were on hot laps!

Horner confirmed that they split the testing program between the two drivers so maybe Sergio was on heavier fuel load. Anyway, he just needs to be top 4 and behind the Ferraris but ahead of the Mercs. ;)

    Agreed

Checo needs to qualify below 3/10's against Max or better. Last year, Checo qualified above 3/10's to half a second against Max.

We are the quickest in S2 ( slow sector) and second to Red Bull in S1 and S3 (power sector).
Sorry guys but I am very optimistic for the race..
( and this is a very good feeling after the last two years)

"With what we have seen today it's starting to be a bit more representative and nobody is at the limit of their car. There haven't been any bad surprises which is good and we seem to be in the mix. It gives us a bit of a smile. But there is still a lot of work to do tomorrow and hopefully we will be able to fight for pole".

"I am quite confident with the car and it's all about testing the limit of the car today and not making mistakes tomorrow. There is still a bit of margin. We tested a lot of things and changed quite a bit of thing this morning, and all the changes we made have worked. We need to do the same tomorrow".

    Leclerc coming for that pole

He should have been on a diet over the winter and loose 5 or 6 pounds. He'll need all of his might to qualify better. The old fact that he'd do better
during the race is not enough this year.

    https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/106490/binotto-hopes-to-beat-verstappen-trying-to-go-for-best.html

    Binotto's thoughts after Friday:

"The tests showed that we and Verstappen would be fast with Red Bull and the first two free practice sessions proved that. We have two drivers who are mentally ready to do well for Ferrari and try to get the best possible result. They are in good shape."

The RB18 looks very fast, but Ferrari refuses to bow its head just yet. "You should always try to go for the best, including the victory. The competition is very strong, it's good to believe that, but we can't fool ourselves. My feeling? Still a little bit of relief."

Also regarding the engine, everything looks positive for the time being."With the power unit we have made a big step forward, but we have to wait for qualifying. Today we got indications, but no results. It's a good sign to see so many Ferrari engines there [at the top]. but I'm sure Mercedes also has horsepower to play with."

The team boss admits that Ferrari has not yet shown everything. “We have pushed, but not to the maximum. But it’s good to see that we are now competitive”

FP2 was where I expected the testing last week to be. Watching today, the cars just look boringly slow...even the so-called fast laps. I found it hard to get a true sense of where any team/driver is really at. And I still don't trust Mercedes (fool me once...etc.). I think this whole weekend is going prove to be more of a shakedown test than a true race. The only difference is that the FIA can charge for tickets.

It may be time to believe what they are saying. HOWEVER, that also includes that if they are able to get their dolphin issues resolved, their car has a lot of potential (in 4 races or so)
