this is a valid point.....i think i saw a video with McGurk saying the same thing - 'i could sell it, but then what would i buy?'
i often say the same to people - what other car could i get for less that would give me the same feelings? there might be some i suppose, but i dont know of any.

In my personal experience having tried many cars over the last 10 years searching for the ultimate driving experiences, nothing compares to the F40. Not to say I’ve tried everything but I’ve tried a lot as an owner, not just a one time casual drive in someone else’s car. I’ve also talked to a lot of people whose driving opinions I respect about cars I considered but did not move on. Many rank the F40 as the top of the chain from a driving experience and based on my experience, I agree.

There are many cars out there to buy and experience for a few years and move on. The F40 holds a permanent garage spot.

Quite a dilemma then. I guess there is no safer place to store your loved ones inheritance, whilst also getting a thrill out of the car until you part this world.

If they are not into the car then at least they can then cash it in, and buy something that makes them smile as much as you did.

The F40's appeal IMO is that it is an iconic Ferrari, is Enzo's last production car, looks pretty damned cool, and when driven it's on-the-boost experience is a thrill few car's can offer.

I purchased my first personal F40 in 1996 for next-to-nothing, because, well, then they were worth nothing. I drove the wheels off it, one summer I used it as an everyday car running errands and did 3,000 miles that summer. That's the car I gave to Thoroughbred & Classic Cars magazine for their feature in the year 2000. It was the best-running of the 3 F40s I owned, because I used it so much. That first F40 was also the one I enjoyed the most because I didn't care and the car was less of a commodity than the next 2 F40s were when they came along. Also by the time the next 2 came along I had experienced the boost a thousand times and somehow it just wasn't as exciting to me any longer, likely because I get to drive other Supercars, F50, Enzo etc. Plus, I used them very sparingly so they always had a few small issues because, well, they are classic cars now and classic cars have issues. F40s do have their driving achilles heels, the brakes, that GTO gearbox etc. By the 3rd one I had really had my F40 fill and don't particularly miss them because I see and sometimes drive F40s weekly in my specialization. That's my perspective as a revolving collector who likes to try new things. All that said, I think an F40 is always a worthy keeper for those that want one.

Careful now, talk like this in a thread titled 'the F40 is undervalued' might soon cause another one to be started titled: 'the F40 is overvalued'...

There are more Supercars than I can list here that can put a smile on your face, you're literally spoilt for choice.

I always appreciate your opinion and always try to keep an open mind and can only speak to my personal experience. While the boost is certainly a thrilling experience, that's not highest on the list of what makes the F40 special for me. I could go on and on about it and why I think it's the top seat relative to other cars I've owned and experienced over the years. While I am definitely in the camp of revolving cars over time to see what other experiences are out there, I have a few cars that have stayed constant in my collection while others have revolved over time. For me, the F40 has it all: the steering weight / feel is like few other cars, the chassis is alive but also compliant. The car feels light and direct, pedals are optimal for heel toe and have a great solid feel. Shifting is a nice event and certainly better than others of the same period I've driven. The car has great balance and feels very grounded. Oversteer is generally predictable (I assume as long as you don't push too far to the limit, which I haven't done). Seats (I can only speak to the Euro seats) are great and give good lateral support, the four point belts only add to the event. For my height, the overall controls and positions are ideal, including the steering wheel. Visibility in all directions is very good, except through the rear louvers. The boost is clearly great and modulating the throttle is a lot of fun. The noises it makes is among the best out there (I liken it to a space shuttle), which only adds to the overall experience. It can be enjoyed even at reasonable speeds and does not need to be pushed to the max for the car to come alive. The entire experience is incredibly engaging and better than I ever imagined it to be. While I always keep an open mind of what else could be as engaging, the F40 is a difficult act to follow!

    Two thing on F40s:

    1. Enzo’s last automobile: “Build me the greatest car ever”

    2. Chris Harris who is arguably this generations most followed car journalist calls it the One. On the road or on the track. “The F50 is a better car, but it’s not the greater car”

    Paraphrased of course.

The F40 is a very important piece of automotive history, unrepeatable for what it is, and forever will be considered a thrilling drive.

by NO means am i even remotely an expert on F40s or F50s, but as one who LOVES them, i just don't understand the price disparity between the two models. I think i'd prefer an F40 regardless of price, but with the market (and i am not a buyer, lol) I'd prefer an F40 and pocket the 2 mil ish difference and live high on the hog, leaving enough to add another F car if i so choose. The nose and the rear of the F40 does it for me all day long....

Rarity of any collectible is often a factor in price disparity, 349 F50s versus 1311 F40s means the former is over 4 times rarer.

Regarding the question "what would you replace it with?" recently I've been having dirty thoughts about an F50... to the point where I might have even considered trading in my F40 for one.

Carrera GT - I had one and let it go. Having F40 and CGT in the garage was pretty special but IMHO the CGT is a terrible road car. Too big, doesn't talk to you until near the limit and at that point you are in jail territory. Needs German-style quiet roads or an F1 level circuit to come alive. And I don't get on with the V10, I find it a soulless shrieking thing, best suited to a race car not a road car (although that is a minority view)

F50 though... so ugly compared to F40 but that V12!!!

I've loved reading the comments above as they have made me fall in love with my F40 again :)

What if you could have an F40 though with a v12! Simpsons in the UK built and raced one in period.
