I think the decline is mental; the motivation wears out after so many years maintaining an incredible effort to stay at the top.

What the French call "l'usure du pouvoir" perhaps? If Hamilton finds that he has a car unable to win, the demotivation will accelerate, IMO.

Will see. Strange he got so far, I mean he was doing sane sort of lap times as Russell on other sessions. I guess those cars are hard to set up.

KMag says the Haas was good for 5th:

Kevin Magnussen, Driver No. 20, Haas F1 Team
“I’ve heard Mick is uninjured which is good and incredible when you see the crash that he had, but the safety is so good with these cars with the fact that you can walk away from a crash like that, it’s impressive. I think he was having a great qualifying session up until that point and he was up for a good result, so he’ll just need to come back and get on the horse and bounce back. We have to be happy with Q3, but the car was better than P10, I didn’t get the most out of it. Honestly my neck just completely broke in Q3 – suddenly it snapped, and I couldn’t hold it. I wasn’t driving well, I think maybe there was a P5 in the car, there’s only half a second up to P5 and my best lap in Q3 was on used tires – and not a great lap as I said. The team had a P5 in it, but I didn’t.”

    Fully agree,
This reasoning is also valid for a good part of the Mercedes staff, including Toto.

Well, my espn recording cut off in the last 6 minutes of Q3. I would have liked Ferrari to be 1, 2, but we are still looking very strong and it will be a hard race for everyone. Yes, it is only the second race of the season, but it shows positive for the season. The only thing more I could ask from Ferrari today is that they go back to shiny paint. Look at how the color red dances with the light on the Alfas. Perez has always had a pole lap inside him...he just rarely finds it. Good for him, today. But I'd like the two Ferraris to get the lead on the start and hold it for as long...well, it should be good race and I think RB will be fighting back.

Lewis is obviously having a terrible time. As is Mercedes. But Lewis and Mercedes have survived down years in the past (though not together)...as have Ferrari and McLaren and RB. The gods of fate can smile on you when they want to, and turn their backs on you when that suits them as well. No one is immune to their fickleness. I hope Lewis and Mercedes can fight their way back towards the front...they are worthy opponents to fight and beat when they are strong. That will make a Ferrari victory even sweeter. I sense (hope?) that the Red Bulls are a little on the fragile side. I sense (hope?) that the Ferrari's are strong and have no real weak spots.

Great start of the year for the other two Ferrari powered teams. Particularly I have a big place in my heart for Alfa. And I look forward to tomorrow's race.

Remember, George is used to driving lousy cars prior to joining Mercedes, so this is his normal! Lewis needs to adjust to driving a lousy car.

I am SO freaking happy for Checo. This guy didn't have a ride just over a year ago really.

Ferrari still looks like the best package and those race suits are stunning. If they can keep it on the track it's a strong podium result for sure.

Hamilton...that must hurt. Ego blow for sure.

Race wise I am concerned. Leclerc drives on the edge and wouldn't be surprised if he puts it into the wall tomorrow. Max similar. Don't think Checo is going to hold off the Tifosi.

Looking at my bets not sure where to roll but longshots on some are the way. Sainz for podium and win is one bet.

When Checo joined RB, I thought one day, he will be better than their #1 driver. The same for Sainz joining Ferrari.

I'm very happy for Checo today. But, make no mistake about it, Max is number 1 on the Red Bull team as long as he wants to stay there.

Ferrari, I'm not so sure. I think both Chuck and Carl are treated as equals until one establishes a large lead in the championship.

Really enjoying this rivalry between Ferrari and Red Bull, seems a whole lot more respectful so far. Genuine happiness from all for Perez' first pole and appreciation for each other during racing etc.

Great from Checo. He even acknowledges that qualifying is not his forte and to be able to snatch Pole in this circuit is remarkable.
Now his second weakness comes into play: the start. If he can keep at least one Ferrari behind, it'd be good. It'll also be interesting
to see Max behind and his approach coming from behind (his teammate). That has not happened very often in recent years.

Regarding Hamilton, well, also not often we see him coming from behind. If they break curfew and change the setup of his car for
the race, he may move up, specially in this race with probably one or two Safety Cars and a Red Flag. Yes, good suggestion to
record two hours after the race ends, ha.

Viva Checo! Well done! Now you must drive to win lol.

Ferrari are solid and I have no worries. Max has had a not so smooth weekend but is most always strong in the race. Will RedBull provide him a swap ahead of Checo??

    Russell well done......................

Mercedes are approaching the drawing board phase of what will we do next. They appear lost............
