What Happened with Dino Values!!!

I did research on the CA grey car issue. If a euro car is already registered in CA, no issue. Also no issue if the car is 68’ and older. If the car is post 68’ and is registered in a place other than CA and even it was at some point previously registered in CA, then it will be very hard to register. God, I love San Diego but CA is pretty wacky. BTW, I am a mere party pumper for the red BaT Dino— I already have the Dino I want and unless the bidding bottoms out low, I will be out.

 

DMV only requires a smog test for cars newer than 1975. All vehicles from out of state do however require a VIN verification to be registered in CA, regardless of age.

The 1968 timeline you refer to, from what I could find on the DMV site, is only applicable to cars brought into CA from outside the country.

Not to dampen everyone's enthusiasm with recent Dino sales, but the BAT prices could be fictitious! If one looks at the recent large auction house sales most Dino's are trading in the high 300, low 400 dollar range for clean cars and that includes the buyer's premium!
Recently, I spoke with a well-known collector car appraiser; who does not use BAT sale prices because they are not recorded prices. He shared scenarios of people using BAT sale prices to be used by some appraisers (who do use them) to value their cars for insurance purposes! This does not implicate BAT in any way.
Just be aware!!!

 

+1 BaT results are not verified. Conditions in the market are ideal for manipulation by a few unscrupulous players and BaT is a perfect platform for them.

 

You have been spoilt by DriverSource adverts that are perfect. Do not think all here are like this.
The DriverSouce show you everything from the buyer's shoes, engine compression and leak out tests, all secret numbers, Bartz report, 150 professional photos, driving videos and services. These Driversource ads leave almost no need for the PPI.

Now compare to the 03744 Dino. No engine numbers, no secret numbers, no Bartz report, no books, no tools, no jack and it is as the owner had no love. Then he threw some books on the paintwork to photograph (shocked!). Missing parts not listed.
This looks like the girl you do not take home to Momma but call her after midnight booty.

We see you bought a Dino and had a super positive experience, which we pray for all to be, but reality is not the case. Just because a Dino is on BAT does not properly confirm it like a DriverSource Dino and the buyers should need do diligence. Please buy a big box of facial tissues and then look at the history of BAT Dino sales to July 2019 and see what kind of Dino a sad human would try to sell to another.

 

This is true of almost any Ferrari on BaT. It's a great venue for sellers- for buyers, not so much.
IHMO there are lots of comments about how perfect cars are, when to even a vaguely trained eye they look like decent driver-quality examples- certainly not ready to win a Platino at Cavallino or an FCA National.
Perhaps it's just a case of folks with a bare modicum of Ferrari knowledge naively thinking that they're experts, but BaT is legion with cases of buyers paying significantly more than a comparable (or better) car would bring based on ads appearing contemporaneously in FML, FCA Bulletin, etc.
And that doesn't even take into account the feasibility of availing yourself of a close look and/or PPI, which is obviously greater when buying via a more traditional method than with any auction, BaT included.

 

not to mention the flowery comments whip up any potential buyers. sorta like the liquor flowing at a barratt jackson auction.

He could tell us of all the cars he did NOT buy because someone did and in his estimation they probably overpaid ...

I like at least one other poster here am not a ferrari guy - I build custom cars as a hobby - I also restore numbers matching cars - I have a silver / red split window coupe currently - but I built a '56 Caddy Convertible Custom that I sold at Barrett in January for 412k with fees

So I am no expert on Dinos - but I really wanted one - I tracked them - I would look for a while then walk away and I watched the prices go up and down a bit

I got serious again - paid for 2 PPI's and bought neither car - then I went to see a car in Long Island and bought it from an exotic reseller/retailer

people thought I overpaid - I paid 369k in 2018 - it's a '74 GTS with 21k original miles - tools, jack, books - pretty well-known history - an honest car that is by no means concours

my opinion about the values of the Dinos is purely based on owning shelbys and corvettes and GTO's (the Pontiac variety) - and Caddies cuz I love them - but my opinion on the Dino values is based on years of watching passion, trends and scarcity (meaning how many actually exist)

I studied the Dino production totals and thought ... there isn't actually that many out there ... and people seemed to be warming up to the beauty so passion was rising ...

So - this is all to say there are still buyers like me - not that knowledgeable about the car but madly in love - I didn't buy it to flip it - and have never really considered restoring it - it still has the Ferrari badge on the trunk lid that someone pasted on there at some point - in 4 years I haven't even washed the car - I have dusted it off maybe twice and I drive it once a week - I love it

I am pretty sure I saw the red 72 246 that is currently offered on BAT - on the roof of the parking structure at the Peterson they had an Italian car show (3+ YEARS AGO) - just a local cars and coffee kinda thing - they are actually having one today for Brittish cars

The owner of the Red Dino was an older guy from San Diego and he had owned the car for a long time - he was nice - we chatted for a while and I got the feeling he was interested in selling it - it clearly was not a perfect example with incorrect pieces and after market add ons - it was a driver - it looks to me like some work has been done before they listed it

I have also shopped these cars a bunch

I almost bought a black/gold 66 gt350 in Laguna 5 years ago - it was an original 4 speed car!

It had a great patina - original - worn out driver

something told me to call my friend in NY who was tight with the Shelby registry guy for 66 shelbys

he put me in touch and the guy said that the shelby number of the car was NOT in the run where they made the 4 speed cars

I made my case telling him that the trans had all the correct dated pieces - it looked like it had been in there since birth - no way it was a switch

he told me there was NO way it was an original 4 speed car - and said that the seller had to be willing to pop the rivets on the plate on the fender skirt and show the number underneath to further verify

they guy selling was a retailer who was selling for a client but was cool and said they had shelby club guys come and say it was real etc but was willing to pop the rivet

he did - and it verified that it was born an AUTOMATIC - I was out - and it was revealed that the trans swap happened 2 years after the car was born with proper NOS parts etc ... so I still don't have my 66 GT 350 - as I really want one of the rare 4 speed hertz cars

so ... what are they worth ? - an AUTO MATIC has become 140 and better - a real 4 speed is 275+

that's a bit of a guess as a quick search shows me some listings that all say INQUIRE about the price lol - but the days of 125 for a nice really well-sorted rent a racer are gone I think - I watched the Shelbys (65-70) all wake up this year at the auctions - there was a good handful at Barrett this year and even Automatic 68's were hitting 200k

I'm sure that was no help - but I love that 66 - still want one

And if you get serious about one - reach out to me as I can put you in touch with the Shebly registry guys who will know a little bit about the specific car and what it should be and the history of it ...

Anyhow, this driver Dino, looks very nice, but a small cry from $400K.?
There are many issues, mostly cosmetic, but what lurks underneath, hmmmm.

It could well turn into a made in USA restoration over $150K, so bottom line a $550K final result,
plus the wait and the aggro of a restoration? No, I'd much prefer the GT from BaT.
Tools, pouch, etc. that's a chunk. Make it a firm $375K
