Before I start pulling off glued in carpet and poking around, can someone tell me if the kick panel is removable, and perhaps any issues with doing so? Only looking to do the left side.

Hey there... what are you expecting to see after you remove the carpet piece and what do you mean "kick plate removable"? I just replaced all my carpet in which all the structural walls inside the cabin which the carpet is glued to is all one piece. The only kick plate that is removal is on the passenger side. There's a steel plate which has some Velcro glued to it to keep the floor carpets from moving around.

Ah, so that panel is structural? From the parts manual it looked like it might be a removable piece.

I'm looking to install a battery disconnect in that panel, and wish to get to the backside of it. Perhaps I can approach this from the wheel well side.

Yep walls inside the cabin are structural with no removing access panels.. If you look in the front tire wheel well you can touch the cabal that's connected to your lever on the backside which opens your front hood. Maybe you can feed something under the dash

You have one easy choice for a battery disconnect.

Get a remote solenoid operated one that disconnects everything (except the solenoid power, and place it at the battery).. That is what i have considered.

You could do a heavy cable rewiring and place a manual disconnect in the engine compartment, Or place a manual one under the front bonnet, with the manual switch behind the spare tire well, probably have to do some mods to the panel that covers the brake stuff to recess the switch so it doesn't interfere with the bonnet. Of course that means opening up the bonnet each time.

There is an access panel in the rear of the front fender well that allows access to the heater hoses and power brake vac hose, but i don't think thats where you want to start routing main battery cables.

Or, if you are content with killing all power EXCEPT to the starter, you could put a solenoid or manual switch in the alternator/ main harness feedline off the starter terminal.

Just lift the hood and pull the neg-to-frame disconnect?

My '79 car has short cable from battery neg then bolted to frame, next to the battery, under the spare tire., way down deep inside. There is no negative disconnect. Maybe newer cars are different?

There is no negative side disconnect in my car. Clearly the negative cable is a newer replacement and goes directly from the neg post to a chassis bolt.

One of my requirements for my older hobby cars is to have a battery disconnect within reach of the driver. I’ve experienced 2 fires and one harness meltdown in 40 years and over 60 cars. One of those was an unattended car that hadn’t been touched in over a week. So maybe I’m unlucky, but I’ve decided to not take chances at this point.
