Hello, all- I’ve sorted through several threads and have come to conclusion that the stock 390 TRX will fit under the hood in the spare tire compartment of an ‘81 US-spec 308 GTSi. From what I’ve gathered it mounts with the face of the wheel downward in the well. The hub center seems to rest right on the pedestal that the retaining bolt goes through. Does this not damage the wheel and/or center cap?
I had the same issue when I bought my ‘81 GTSi. I made a spacer to solve the issue. I would lose that spare tire, and gain some more storage space . Either have the car towed, or use fix a flat to get you to the tire shop, if it can be plugged, do that . I would not want to be hauling a donut, let alone a full size tire . Thank you
Gino, The issue with that was the front-end of the car felt a little 'lite' to me at about 110-120mph without the tire (or approx weight) in there. When the tire was on board, I didn't feel the same 'lite' feeling. Could it have been something else causing that feeling? Sure, I suppose so ....
Maybe have the 4 wheel alignment done on your car . Its a 40% / 60 % front to rear. Maybe its your tires / pressures . You should not have to use ballast in order for proper handling . Thank you
The light front end feeling at higher speed is commonly mentioned for cars with the 'shorty' standard front spoiler, and is eliminated with the optional factory deep spoiler (often referred to as the Euro front spoiler). My 84 Euro QV had a TRX with ancient tire in it for a spare when I bought it, which a previous owner had obtained - the car came with the 16" wheels from the factory. I replaced the TRX unit with a suitably modified Volvo S80 space saver wheel/spare (needed a couple of extra holes drilled to clear the brake disc holder posts). Gordon
