I get the Motor1 daily email, and yesterday it introduced the Maserati Grecale as the newest Porsche Macan competitor. I like the Macan, and I like the Grecale. And the Alfa Stelvio is nice, kind of like the Jaguar F-Pace. But the differences between them are getting harder to appreciate. They all look similar.

The new Bronco looks like a new Land Rover Defender. The Ferrari Roma is gorgeous, but it's basically an Aston DB11, which is like an updated DBS.

On Sunday, I saw a Corvette C8 parked next to a Lamborghini (not sure which model but it wasn't the Urus) and had to do a double take to confirm they were different. Both had that sort of angry Transformer look.

I remember when you could buy a Ferrari 308 or Mondial, Aston Martin V8 Vantage, Porsche 911 or 928 or 944 Turbo, Jaguar XJ-S, Alfa Romeo Spider, BMW e30 M3, or a Mercedes 560 SL and you could tell them apart by silhouette, at dusk, in the fog, after two and a half pints of something with foam. I wasn't in love with the 928, Mondial or XJ-S, but they were unique and had presence. Testarossa, Countach ... not too hard to tell these apart.

Now I can't distinguish between the dozens of models of BMW, and I've lost interest altogether... I used to think the 911 was boring because it never really changed, but now it's one of the few cars with a distinctive design.

Are classic cars the only distinctive car designs left?

How true. Many of them drive the same as well. Blurred lines indeed.
