Hello All, I recently inherited my father's Ferrari collection. 1982 308 GTSi 1985 Testarossa 2004 360 Spider I need to get all cars refreshed as they have been sitting for years. It's amazing to me how unscrupulous these service departments can be. I recently had the same sort of work done to my 2008 911 4S and they wanted $6k! For spark plugs, brake bleed, and some filters. Insane. I let them do spark plugs and new battery and oil change and some other odds and ends for $3k. Now the 360 is at Ferrari of Central NJ and they are starting to look over the car. First order of business: $900 for a new battery. $900! I thought about buying a battery myself and having it delivered, but they were still going to charge $450 for install! Amazing. So I told them to go ahead and do it. I just want to get the process started (they need to start the car to diagnose). I have a feeling that the quote is going to be laughably ridiculous. I mean, this isn't an F40 they're working on. I imagine I will wind up having the car picked up and brought somewhere else. The only problem is where? Where in the NJ, tri-state area would you guys recommend I take this car? I don't mind spending money, but I can't stand getting screwed.
Sounds like you are not ready for the pain. Sell the cars ASAP. You cannot compare Porsche to Ferrari. Ferrari is Ferrari and defy all logic.
I completely disagree. Take your time, assess what you have and what you want. Find an independent that works earnestly (Yellow Compass raised their hand) (I have no personal experience with them). Your dad had some cool cars! The 308 crowd on FerrariChat are very knowledgeable and very helpful. Ask some questions there. $900 for a battery change???!!!??? There is something I don’t understand.
+1 for Fonz at Jscuderiaautomotive for the Ferrari work. If you need work on your 911 (service, body, upgrades, misc) instead of the dealer use Bodymotion in Ocean township (https://www.bodymotion.com) would be the place to go.
Nice picture of Fonz. That must be his old shop. Here are some pics of his new one... Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
That is just absurd. You can try Scuderia Performante in Malvern, PA. They may be a bit more reasonable. Heck, even Algar seems a bit more reasonable than the place you have now, but I personally would look for a knowledgeable indy like Scuderia or the one Mike suggested.
Stealer-dealer service departments are for two things only: 1. Warranty work 2. Covered maintenance Dealers will rape you. If the service isn't being paid for by Ferrari, the car should be taken to an independent shop.
i grabbed a brand new AGM battery from Walmart, installed it myself in less than an hours for a total of $320 bucks fyi.
Yes, i wouldnt have shipped the cars to a main dealer. Only use the main dealers when warranty or when you dont mind paying 2x or 3x bc you want to build a relatonship with them in order to be offered limited edition cars. That applies to any exotic or semi exotic brand. I also did the same with my Porsches. As soon as warranty was done, i used a good independent. Only drawback is i dont get a loaner but then i have 2 other cars so no big deal.
If you are not mechanically inclined, spend some time on YouTube watching videos of guys doing the simpler maintenance. Also, have a friend come help you. If I were closer I would help, I hate seeing people get screwed for something so simple. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
yes but that take commitment. I have seen lot of guys "step-up" to a Ferrari from Porsche only to be utterly disappointed in build quality and engineering. The 550M I drive now is one such car that drove it's Fchat owner batsh!t crazy despite us telling him what a great car is was. I knew the bones of the car were good. So when the final straw of burnt cat drove the owner off the deepend I bought the car and it has been flawless once I sorted it. The previous owner is a happy Porsche guy and could never be tempted to buy a Ferrari again. Face it. All Ferrari owners are dating the prom queen and she has issues!
Can confirm you spend boatloads on 456M too. $35k in 3 years to sort and upgrade a car with only 20K.
You spend the $$$ and find a indy who can work on the car. -or- You work on it yourself if you have the knowledge and spend $. Learning how to own a Ferrari and doing the research about owning the marque is essential for anyone. Even a Honda dealership charges $$$$$ for a battery compared to Costco.
Not really. It really is a different game than a Porsche or other car. (Although a Porsche dealer also charges $$$$$$)
Thanks for all the good info. I'll update here in a couple days when I get the final quote from Ferrari Central NJ. I have a feeling I'll be flatbedding the car to an indy shop. Just for context, I grew up with Ferraris and have no intention of selling. I can afford to maintain the cars (they aren't the only things I inherited - God bless you mommy and daddy), however I refuse to be screwed on principle. As dad always said, I don't mind spending money but I HATE wasting it.
Same same here with my previous to the 360 456M, and it only had 7K miles when I bought it! LOTS of rot from sitting in a garage without climate control for about five years. Rescuing unloved Ferraris is something not many are willing to do. Satisfying though. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Hate getting screwed too. Find a reliable indy and you should be ok. And yes, ferraris cost money to maintain….last year I spent nearly 100k on maintenance and am already up to 35k for this year….. Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat
Hey! I'm not sure how the pricing will be, but Classic Coach Repair in Edison, NJ knows what they are doing! They are a certified repair shop for Ferraris and most dealers take their cars to Classic Coach. The owner is an amazing person and will treat you right, he's a family man. I would look into brining the cars there or Miller Motorcars in Greenwich, they have a great team there, but it is another dealership. Best of luck!
Vinnie Latino is another fantastic Ferrari Master technician ! With impeccable credentials http://www.auto-elite.net/Home.html
