348 Engine blew 367 days after last major...

I'm betting the little cambelt follower flappy looking thing wasn't happy in its' proper position and decided to relocate unexpectedly, beginning an unfortunate chain of events. Coulda been improper installation, coulda been a failure of the plastic cambelt cover. Coulda been metal fatigue. Coulda been aliens. But who really knows????

 

The engine failure out here before this one was actually due to plastic chunk breaking off the timing cover and running under the drive pully. Was likely cracked or got cracked during assembly/install of the prior major.

Pictures are very hard to post. You have to go out and buy film, get your aperture and shutter speed right, take a roll of pics, drop them off to get developed, pick up the prints. And you still can't post them online without a scanner. So maybe the OP is out looking for a scanner so he can digitize the prints? Rome wasn't built in a day.

 

Yep, we've been trolled big time. Now in everyone's minds we will think oh a 348 that blew an engine.....but remember, it never really happened as nothing makes sense in this entire thread. So give it no credence!

 

I'm picking up the car on Friday. I'll take lots of photos of the blown engine and post them on this site on Saturday. I'll be selling the blown engine immediately online via an auction (BAT) or on eBay. It's been a long wait, almost 400 days. Special thanks to Ferrarium for your continued support.

 

Glad it got resolved, classic coach does top shelf work so drive in confidence. Still waiting for my heads. Can't wait I'm going to absolutely ruin my car with miles [emoji39]

Not sure what the urgency is, I suspect he has things going on and plunking at the computer to relive a failure as probably not at the top of his list. Not everyone, like me, runs to post when there is a thing of note. I'll wait patiently, definitely curious.

your right 9500 but over revs to 12. Was like 12 years ago now.

 

The 2018 CRF250 strangely, although designed to rev to 14,000 rpm, Honda put a soft rev limiter in at 12,000 rpm. That killed off the final 2000 rpm of top-end power that was needed to make the high-rpm gamble work.

Wow looks like that cam bearing lost oil and seized braking the timing belt and let the valve get hit by the piston that’s probably why the adjustment shim popped out you can see the hold down cap and nut for the cam bearing was super hot

In pic #4 it looks like damage on the head to the bottom right where the shim sits —-I am I see that right ???
Also you can see there was no oil flow in that area at all

What does the tech think ????

Left head, front bearing. Last in the daisy chain to get oil. Is the aluminum plug in the back of the cam missing?

How was oil pressure?

In the block deck at the rear the head alignment dowel is also an oil restrictor in the passage feeding the head. . Its is quite small and I have seen them get plugged and rob oil to the head. Looks just like that.

Never read back that far. He had just had oil changed at dealer. I saw this on a TR. Ferrari oil filter failed internally and a piece of it clogged oil passage to head. Ferrari paid every nickel for the repair. Oil filter purchased from them failed to perform primary duty.

 

So much for "valves hit piston in one cylinder"

I mean, just because they only broke off in one cylinder doesn't mean the rest didn't hit

 

Does not look like the cause was over revving which caused it to throw a shim which jives width the OP account that he was just tooling along, it looks like oil starvation issue of sorts from the scoring. Wonder of overtightening the cam cap can cause that?

I mean if you look at the cam the whole thing, all of it just seems dry and baked.
