If you refer to the difficulty shifting into second when cold this applies to pretty much every 5 speed Ferrari

My 83 Mondial does it too shifts hard into second when cold. All gated ferrari have this problem one way to resolve it is start from second gear instead of first

Or skip 2nd gear until the gearbox warms. It is also a good way to be nice to your engine while it is still waking up.

It's very common, although what I found really helps is just making sure the shift linkage is just tightened up. It's not straightforward, and I wouldn't do it unless you need to open up the shift housing anyways. Make sure the connections are tight from the shift lever mechanism and through under the car, follow the two red cables and make sure it's tightly connected to the linkage box. Basically, just make sure everything is taught. It won't make it go away entirely, but it did make it less balky for me. I did this myself and found it helped.

Regardless of what you do, after 10 minutes though it should be smooth as butter.

The gated to this day is one of life's pure pleasures. Truly.

The problem with this is that you also are not supposed to exceed 4k RPM until the oil temp has warmed up. So, if you start in 1st gear and shift straight into 3rd gear without going over 4k RPM in first, then unless you're going downhill you are lugging your engine in 3rd after the shift. Basically you have to drive like granny on the way to church for the first 5-10 minutes.

The revs can be kept below 4k with a 1 to 3 shift. I suppose I am "lucky" in that my neighborhood is zoned 25 mph. I can let the grannies pass me as I doddle along while the engine warms. I have always been impressed with how much low rpm torque the engine has.

Agreed, the low-end torque is not bad at all!

Supposedly, drilling a small hole will solve it. Don't know if this is true...

    Here is a thread.

    also tech article attached

Also start with the easiest thing, try changing your transmission oil first. I use redline for 10 years, love it

Redline gear oils will solve the issue.

Which Redline gear oil? They makes 6 or 7 different kinds.

At least for the 308 GTS/GTB, the most appropriate Redline gear oil is generally considered to be MTL.

A good gear oil maximizes performance of the gearbox but may not completely eliminate the cold shift performance of second gear. The problem is partially related to the design of the gearbox itself.

FWIW, my gearbox doesn't seem to mind being shifted into second while cold. Despite this, I still skip second until the engine warms a little.

I use Redline or the Shell full synthetic, You will find that 2nd gear becomes easier. Now mind you, I have always used syn gear oil, my 328 has 104,000 miles, and I have never had a problem with 2nd gear cold shifts .Make sure your blipping the thin pedal on the right in between shifts, that gearbox loves it .

    Thank you
