Yep, it looks like Mercedes missed the boat completely this year.

They just keep adding these drag-creating little vortex generators all around the sidepods to get air into and around these supposedly low-drag sidepods, LOL.

Starting to look like the new low-profile wet tires aren't as capable as the older ones.

Doesn't bode well for the season.
If they had this much trouble in these conditions, we may be seeing a LOT of weather related red flags, this year.
    ${DEITY} help the Spa race.

Sky commentators (Ham fanbois) speculated that Merc is running dry track wings.

I would not be surprised if Magnussen win a race this year.

If the issues was just porpoising, the higher ride height they put on cars for rain conditions, the softer suspension and so on, really should've minimized Mercedes' woes. If their speed in quali is as dreadful as they showed in FP1, they really should just bin the chassis, forget about any upgrades and work on their 2023 chassis. I'm leaning more and more towards the reason for their terrible car is horrible packaging that makes it have a high centre of gravity. Few things make sense otherwise:
Their engine is good (ok not the best anymore, but certainly it's not massively down
If the zero sidepod concept prevented a decent coke bottle area taking shape and therefore their rear tyres are causing high drag, new sidepods would've been fitted by now that would fix this. If anything, that would a) be a easy fix b) be cheap! It wouldn't require an internal layout change and new chassis, just new sidepod/engine cover and you can form a new diffuser around it later.
Ferrari clearly showed in Melbourne that despite heavy porpoising, the car was still fast (the fastest)

My theory is the high centre of gravity combined with the (now soft) suspension is exaggerating the pendulum effect they'll likely have, which hurts driver confidence thus they can't push resulting in a loss of tyre temp.

I can't see them building a new chassis (which would mean a complete change of concept) and stay within the budget, and certainly not possible to do this under after the summer break.

Why would thy do that? There’s no parc ferme after FP1 and even after Quali you’re allowed to make changes if the meteorological conditions have changed afaik.

I must have missed something or the British Hamilton apologists are desperate to make up excuses

Did they really say that? Like only Merc is doing this?

As the rest of the weekend is supposed to be mostly dry I would expect every team is doing the same.

Just filling the air with talk, they "observed" that Ham didn't have a "special wing".

I usually just tune out the commentators. Probably should resume doing that.

Ferrari was testing its engines in FP1. Both Charles and Carlos had full power in the session. This is the first time that Ferrari has increased its engine power in free practice in 2022.

    --
That partially explains their speed then I guess?

With a dominant car, a good driver should win. Would you prefer he lose or say Charles lose in a good car. This argument is tired.

    Whataboutism is lazy and tired.

My argument is against those that point to the record number of wins—achieved with a hugely dominant car over 8 years of 20+ races per year—as the metric of GOAT.

Like I already wrote: good driver, fake records. Not GOAT!

Also very tired of this nonsense and cluttering of the F1 section with HAM/GOAT threads and discussions.

Never said the word GOAT. What is apparent here is people simply dont like what happend at Mercedes.
    Lauda recruited LH
The car was developed to win
    They kept winning
They dont like LH for what ever reason that suits them.

Bottom line - He took a winning car and won. Thats the game. Move on to badminton if that eludes you.

If Ferrari really does have some excess engine power, much better to keep it under wraps. Like Mercedes in the past multiple years, who were able to pull more power out of the bag whenever necessary. Then, perhaps less likely for the powers that be to consider changing things up to balance the field......
