Hi all, I noticed there is some unusual noise coming out of my 612 engine bay on cold start. The car recently had cambelt a replaced before my ownership so I’m not sure if this was there or not. In the video there is the normal valve ticking but another noise coming from the front of the engine. Is this normal or could be one of the pulleys ? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Engine sounds sweet to me but with almost a rubber on metal intermittent sound or maybe dirty pulley bearing sound. Try with ac off and on to see if the extra compressor load makes any difference, do the same with pas by having a helper turn the steering wheel. Also a small amount of silicone belt lube on the inside and edges of auxiliary might help with diagnosis.
That’s the exact sound I was referring too. The aux belt suppose to be new as well as cam belts and pulleys. My mechanic will come around to check this evening to see what it could be Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Agreed- sounds like a noisy bearing in there. Hopefully its not on one of the cam pullies, as this means taking the belts off again. This is exactly what happened to me. In hindsight, I think the bearings must have been on their way out, and the new cam belts and tensioners just accelerated the wear to the point it was audible.
My mechanic ( Ferrari indie ) checked the car and said it’s the noise from power steering pump but nothing to be worried about. Has anyone else experienced some noise from power steering pump ? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Noise from the ZF steering pump is not uncommon, especially if its been recently refilled. It should settle down after a few hours of running. If not, and I doubt you need it, these pumps are very cheap and easy to rebuild. They're shared with many cars, so the seals etc are easily sourced.
The noise settles down after 5-10 mins of driving. It has new power steering oil . Glad to know it’s not major
Just an update on this , the noise was related to low level of power steering fluid . Definitely check yours too. Once it was filled correctly there is no further noise Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Ferrari at one point was using the same additive used in the 599 to quiet lifter noise for the 612 F133 engine after complaints. Same lifters as the 550 and 575, but those F133 engines are so noisy on start-up we cannot even hear the lifters.
Mine ticks so smoothly and without any unusual noise. Lifters are quiet too. The only whining noise was from the steering pump which went quiet after fluid top up .Does the noise come after certain mileage ? Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Any information on ZF Steering Pump rebuild or replacement would be appreciated. The seal on mine are slightly weeping and would prefer to rebuild or replace if you have the part number from another car so I can avoid the Ferrari markup of a new pump.
