I get what you're saying, but I'd take 1 point and pole for the main race over 10 points and starting 8th. There's a lot of risk starting midpack and trying to get from 8th to 2nd, even with the fastest car, which is what you'd have to reliably do in order to make winning the sprint worthwhile.

If the points were the same in both races, it wouldn't matter which of the two you won so it would make sense to try as hard as you can in both, but now you have two main races. Even then, the guys in 5-7 would probably be trying to moonwalk back to 8th.

It just doesn't make sense to me to reward people for going slower in motor racing. It creates conflicting incentives.

What makes even less sense to me is to do everything possible to determine the race pace of the cars as accurately as possible (e.g. parc ferme, sprint quali, qualify on first stint race tires, etc.), line the cars up in that order, and then wonder why there isn't more overtaking in the race. :)

Yes, preferably I'd have no sprint race at all but if the FIA insists on having them might as welll make it make sense.

Giving up 9 points because of the possibility of a mid pack scuffle at the main race is a big consideration...

This system worked well in GP2/F2.

Right now with the current system, there is zero incentive of going for a place. Max took a pretty big risk for no big reward...and equally Leclerc didn't defend as hard as he may have done.

What we've seen in the other sprint races is that no one wants to take the risk in overtaking or defending too hard. The reward isn't there...therefore the sprint race normally is quite a procession. This was the first one that wasn't, because we had faster cars out of position.

Not just a scuffle, but it's easy to see getting bogged down in 3rd or worse or stuck in a DRS train for half the race.

I still remain of the opinion that Sprint races are a gimmick...;)

Anybody still want 10 points + starting 8th instead of 1 point + pole? ;)

Its just about the 'show' lol -

Why Formula 1 is pushing for sprint races expansion
An expansion of sprint events for 2023 is one of the key items on the agenda of today's Formula 1 Commission meeting in London.

Brawn was clearly pleased by the way the Imola sprint had unfolded. He remains the biggest supporter of the format, and he's heavily invested in it as a way of reaching new fans – while not alienating existing ones.

"We've always had an objective of trying to get new fans interested in F1," he told Autosport on Sunday morning. "And we're achieving it, I think we're achieving a younger demographic. We're concerned that F1 gets to be an old white man's sport.

"You and I have been in it for donkey's years, but how do we get the new people in, how do we get new fans, how we get fans of all sorts of profile engaged in the sport? And we found from an early stage that sort of bite-sized chunks of F1 would be popular. That's proven to be the case on social media, with streaming services, YouTube compilations, all the rest of it. And that's done its job.

"But we also felt that it can be quite appealing to have a half hour race, lots of action, no strategy, so there's no reason for a fan to have to work out, 'he's done his pit stop on lap 13, he's done his on 17, he's going to have better tyres.' That's fantastic for the people who are really engaged in F1, we don't want to spoil that.

"But for a short race, with no strategy - tyre degradation comes in, but I think everyone understand these tyres wearing out. So that was what we wanted to create, and that's what we're on the path to doing that. Who knows where it will end up?"

Brawn has made it clear from the start that it's not just about the Saturday sprint, but also a more exciting and relevant Friday.

"The other thing it does is it gives us a full weekend," he noted. "Which for a promoter is great. I mean, anything we can do to fill the seats for a promoter, get people watching the TV more often is positive.

Of course it's for the show, which isn't necessarilly a bad thing.

Ross Brawn gives 2 strong arguments in favour of sprint races, IMO.

Not bad. But there should be a limit how much the 'show' works in relation to the racing we say we want.

A sprint race brings uninterrupted racing; that's what I like because it brings back racing in its purest form: without strategy.

If the FIA goes towards replacing GP with 2 sprint races, I would welcome it.

You could easily get this by removing the rule where you have to change tire compounds.

Pirelli would have to make tyres that last the distance.

But that would still leave only one race instead of 2 !

    Correct:: 1 weekend = 1 race = 1 set of point distributions.

2 sets of point distributions per weekend is not what F1 should be all about -- it is akin to having a double header in football (American football)--too much wear and tear on components that have to last multiple weekends.

But Pirelli already makes tires that last a whole race:: the previous race; one driver pitted on the last lap.

Well, in that case one had to love the Imola sprint race because it was a proper and exciting race. And for those who whinge about the "impurity" of races with tyre changes . . . . there were no tyre changes in the sprint race.

Technically yes. But tyre change is mandatory and brings pit stop strategy, undercut, etc ...

I agree 2 races per weekend would go against the grain.

But F1 traditions have been interfered with so much already ...

Perhaps the traditionalists would have us go back to 9-6-4-3-2-1 as well?

You make that statemen as if it adds to the thrill of the race.
    It does not really.
And it detracts from the skills needed by the driver.

No it doesn't, and that's why I wish we could do away will all these pit stops.

    Damned Bernie for introducing them!

Happy to see this. We dont need more Netflix short attention span fans. Good news. I have zero issues with the format as is. Since testing is limited the Practice session matter in terms of development etc. Good news!

FIA puts roadblock on F1’s sprint race expansion
Formula 1’s plans to increase the number of sprint races to six in 2023 hit a roadblock on Tuesday when the FIA blocked the vote going through, sources have revealed.

Following a meeting of the F1 Commission in London, plans by F1 owner Liberty Media to increase the number of sprint events met little resistance from teams.

But, when the matter came down to getting the majority support it needed, the unanimous backing from the competitors and FOM was not enough to push the matter through as the FIA did not support the plan in its current guise.

For the sprint expansion to get put in to regulations for 2023, it needed what is known as a ‘simple majority’ of 25 votes from the 30 on offer between the teams (10), the FIA (10) and FOM (10).

With only the teams and F1 in agreement, the FIA’s resistance meant the proposal failed for now.

That settles it then. So the increase was blocked.

That means there will still be 3 sprint races left on the calendar for 2023, no?

I don't think we have heard the last of this, and the idea may resurface in future.

Overall they are a failure and offer ZERO for the race weekend. It is just different and confusing and useless. The teams have less time to set up and adjust the car overall. Austria was not well received and boring per the feedback noted by F1 and Toto. Stop doing this. Also the budget cap has changed nothing in terms of smaller teams doing ANYTHING at all to move forward. Dump that as well. I dont care how badly the smaller teams are doing. If they want to challenge - spend more, hire better staff and get to work improving.

Wolff has faith Domenicali will pick right F1 sprint venues
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has faith that Formula 1 chief Stefano Domenicali will pick the right venues for future sprint races, after mixed responses to the Austrian Grand Prix spectacle.

But, despite believing that F1 can do better with sprints, Wolff says part of the ultimate problem in producing great racing is the performance disparity between teams.

“I think the reason why races have less entertainment is because there's just too much performance gap between the teams,” he said.
