Does that really surprise you? I also wonder if one of the things that may be dawning on the people who spend every bit of equity that they build up in their property on ‘stuff’ is that their golden goose may be cooked...

Yep, but back then average loan was probably less than $100k; big difference now that loans are $500k - every 1% adds $5,000 a year to the bill WITHOUT increasing equity by a cent.
Just for reference my first house (actually ‘our’ as I was married then) cost $126,000 at more than 15% in 1991 but we only needed a loan of $70k and that got paid off in around 4 years as we were both earning good money. I paid double necessary amount each month. Graduate architects here on the coast now earn LESS than I was earning then (I was working in a specialty field in Hong Kong).. The world is a bit nuts these days...

Yep, it’s like evrything - free market is great until it goes pear shaped, then everyone’s on the band wagon looking for the government to solve the problem (which of course they can’t) . Not sure who’s housing policy is the craziest out of the big 2, but I am worried about the idiots who will vote for Palmer to “keep interest rates at 3% for the next 5 years”. Ironically, probably the most honest thing Palmer has ever said in his life is that people will lose their homes at 6%... I know the banks have been stress testing at 7% for sometime, but many people will already have hocked themselves up to that anyway...

 

Good mate of mine bought his 430 from FMS around 5 years ago for $220K…FMS just bought it back with more KMs for 300K…They had been hounding him for 6 months..

Lots of market commentators and taxi drivers predicting house prices are going to fall
When the taxi drivers are predicting a fall in prices, history would predict that they are wrong and there is more possibility of prices being higher in 12 months time than where they are now
They are not renowned for predicting market tops or bottoms

Yeah I was tempted to get a 458 @ $290k (asking so could have probably got it for $270) with only 15k kms 2 years ago.... Sigh. That's mondial money now.
