Hi, I’ve had a rattling noise from the engine bay and found out that the heat exchanger has come loose from the bracket. How is the exchanger supposed to be fitted to the bracket? It looks like it was soldered? Advice is much appreciated!

We just had a similar issue with an L-series car recently. The heat exchanger is soldered to the mounting bracket. Its quite a job to get the heat exchanger out to repair. I sent the heat exchanger to my radiator shop and had them clean it and resolder the bracket back into the original position.

Thanks! I guess that means that there is no easy way to resolder it as it sits in the engine bay? If not, is there anything particular I should be wary of? Drain oil, remove the exchanger and bracket, soldier, and then reverse the operation? It does like quite a tight fit to remove the bracket but I will give it a try:)

A temporary fix (if you are in a bind) might be to use a large vent clamp. There is enough meat to pick up the bracket and heat exchanger. I remember I did this on my M Series to hold it in place until I had time to fix it.

    Cheers,

I have repaired the heat exchanger with no big issues. You need to take it out, clean it completely and resolder it using an prober flux system, a bar of tin and a simple gas tourch. Take good care of the exchanger since it’s extremely difficult to source a spare. I have some pictures of the process to spare if interested.

thanks, I believe the bracket is different on the L-series but will try - it would make the trip to the workshop a lot easier

They should be the same. I believe it changed for E-series

I stand corrected; your tip worked perfectly, the car is now running fine and will drive it to the shop for a proper fix shortly. Thanks a million, and boy how I love fchat
