You wanna see a F8 next to a F355... Makes the F355 look like a matchbox car.

The new cars only have the appearance of being small because they don't have the height - but yeah they're really long and very wide.

If you ever see a 250 you'll be even more surprised. Super small.

Times have moved on fellas. Good news is there's a reasonable number of classics out there to pick from.

And anybody who reckons classics aren't that reliable should take a read of the SF90 threads.

    Great photo.

People reckoned the Testarossa's had a crazy wide rear end at the time.. In retrospect they weren't really that big after all.

It's been a while since I last saw a Testarossa.. When I saw one the other day I was actually quite surprised at how small they are too. Strange how memories work.

I’m of the same mind that newer sports cars lack the soul and connection of the best older cars. My stopping point with Ferrari was the 550 and 430 spider, for me it was the apex of the right amount of power, timeless design and connection. One modern car that I feel is an engineering masterpiece is my McLaren 675 spider, it has a mechanical and tactile feel that I’ve not experienced in another modern sports car. These 3 cars cover all the bases for me.

I dunno there's still a bit of hope out there. We just have to get used to the fact we live in different times now.

And yeah they're crazy expensive now, but many people forget they were also stupid expensive back in the day. People say a lot of bad things about a 6cyl Ferrari, but then again people said similar things about Ferrari V8's when they first came out too...

We can all probably agree that the upcoming SUV isn't a good thing. I'm still trying to figure out why they would build such a thing.

    Agreed Shark!

The more that interferes with the actual driving experience, the more removed the driver and future drivers will be from, well... driving. More and more, 'drivers' are quasi-passengers who point and shoot the car in the direction they want to go and then all the systems start running interference to keep you on the straight and narrow. I don't want an alarm screaming at me to tell me I'm 1 inch from the edge of the tarmac - I know I am, I put the car there, AND I did it on purpose. I know you can tone the systems down in the modern Ferraris, but you can't switch them off completely (regardless of what the manual says).

My 360 (Australian delivered, grigio titanio, manual trans) puts up a big fat red signal in the middle of the tacho when I switch everything off - just so I actually know I'm being an idiot - that's it. But do so at your peril on this stupidly tail-happy toy - but it's great fun. There's no fancy buttons or dials on the steering wheel, no paddles to distract, no stupid motorcycle style indicators, just 3 pedals, a gated gear stick and a simple Ferrari steering wheel with a horse in the middle :)

My 2002 Holden Monaro doesn't even ding at me if I haven't put my seatbelt on, or not closed a door, or left the lights on, or the boot ajar, etc, etc. It is the epitome letting the driver drive, because the driver knows what they're doing.

I used to think the 400/412 was massive… now it looks low and svelte next to the 599.

Yup, my GT3 ruined new cars for me. IMO you get a new car for speed + safety + reliability. An older car will do a great job of making you smile w/o requiring you to go extremely fast. I'd track a new car, and street drive (backroads) an old car.

I tracked a 488 some years ago (soon after my 18th bday). As you might imagine, I was extremely excited to drive my favorite brand of all time: Ferrari. Unfortunately, it was one of the most underwhelming driving experiences ever. Coming from a Ford Focus RS, I was expecting the 488 to redefine my definition of a good car. The car was fast, but it felt unengaging and too numbed up for my taste.

In terms of modern Ferrari's, perhaps the special/track oriented variants are the ones to go for? Have you driven any of the new ones?

It’s pretty amazing. Although I remember the 308 being a very low car even in 1985, my first Ferrari sighting when I was in high school.

I drove that 599 from Orlando to Amelia 9 years ago. The Ferrari Club of America had that car to be driven to every club Region and most Chapters. I filled the link between the Orlando chapter to hand it off to the GA chapter at the Amelia Island Concours. Each driver was to sign the log kept with the car and leave a comment. My addition was "this car is no fun under 100". The club President had a GPS installed so he knew where the car was and how fast it had been driven. Jus doing my part :)

I drove that same car briefly. I recall someone mentioning something about I wasn't supposed to go over X RPM. They didn't say I couldn't. They just said I shouldn't. ;)

I wonder where that car is now.

The car was owned by Jim Taylor of Saratoga Springs NY. Taylor and his brother owned the company that made glass for almost every single boat ever made. I have visited his collection of 200+ cars including every Jaguar model ever made....including a D-Type and a C-Type. Jim bought the car and leased it to the FCA for the year. Jim is the adventurous type making driving treks all over the world....kinda like Malcomb on steroids. My guess is that he still has it...along with a six speed 3 pedal 599 [one of 37].
