    Hi everyone,

I'm asking for some advice. I am looking to move from NY to GA and I have multiple vehicles that are of considerable value. One specifically, a 2019 812SF.

I have already been overly taxed by NY for this car and now it looks like I will be taxed again by GA tens of thousands, plus my other vehicles. It doesn't seem right to be taxed twice because it's not a new purchase. If this is the case, it would be cost effective to do the Montana thing.

With that said, can anyone shed any light or experience with this? Also, any GA residents who have done the Montana LLC? If so, do Police target you.

you can google search on the GA crackdown on this

there was a thread on the GBI morning raid on a guy with multiple montana plates

i also posted the info memo from the DMV on owners transferring montana titles to GA here somewhere

GA is not the place you want to be doing this

Agreed, if there's a state you don't want to do this in, it's GA.

Jut register in a state like FL which isn't on the radar like Montana. Higher sales tax but you get credit on trade in and no recurring property tax.

I have experience with this, but not in GA. If I lived in GA, I would not have experience with this … because that is one state I would not want to test. Good luck!

I had to deal with this when I moved BACK to Georgia, but my most expensive car was my Z06 that was way undervalued by the state. They made it a one-time fee in 2013, which helped. It's an unfortunate part of GA life but there's really no way around it....

BUT just a few years ago they cut the TAVT for new residents in half so it won't be as bad as in the past. It's not retroactive, I asked ;). You can also negotiate to a certain extent...they will use NADA if it's less than the state value. The Montana thing worked for awhile but they really started cracking down on it, which I think is the reason they cut taxes. I ended up "kinda" breaking even though because when I got my 99 Modena, they only valued it at $35k or so, so the taxes ended up only being $2k...just know that it's a WAY better process than it used to be.

Thank you very much...From what I gathered this far, everyone has advised me to steer clear from the Montana thing.

    So I guess I have to see what I am looking at when I get there. I have the 2019 SF, I have a leased 2021 M5, leased 2021 X5M, and 2 older M3's.

You can see that I am potentially looking at significant taxes.

Yeah, you're gonna get screwed to some extent, you can use this to estimate, make sure you put that you are a new resident or sticker shock might cause health issues.

    The 812 isn't registrering...The M5 and X5M is around $2900 each. I assume the 812 will be around $11,000.

They will use 3% of NADA so you are probably pretty close on that. There is a possibility that the leased cars may be a little bit less but I would definitely budget for the totals you come up with. Welcome to GA by the way!

Thank you for the welcoming, and thank you for the information. It's been very helpful. My 7th offer was finally accepted and hopefully everything moves smoothly. My family and I are moving to Milton. I have lived in NY my whole life and I no longer recognize it. More importantly, I didn't feel it was prudent to raise my children there. NY is finished.

Wow, I do have to say that the GA tax seems onerous. When I bought my 612 in Ohio and had to pay Ohio tax, Massachusetts gave me full credit for the tax I paid to Ohio. I just had to pay the .25% (quarter percent) difference.

Holy cow, I never knew about double taxation in Georgia! Sounds ridiculous but small price to pay for what’s important to you

Sounds like Hudson valley changed a lot, it was nice, but boring from what I remembered. I grew up in dutchess county, pretty rural, small town life back then. Last time I visited, way different, lots of hipsters, small hats and big beards :)

I grew up in Fishkill and then moved to Montgomery (near Newburgh). It's a beautiful place to live, but politics have driven crime, costs, and overall nonsense way up. In NY you can literally rob someone at gunpoint and be released same day with no bail....BUT, you can't have window tints and loud exhausts for people's safety. That's no BS, that's really how absurd it is here.

They just passed an exhaust law that any shop that installs any type of exhaust modification can be fined a lot of money. In fact, there was a recent car show at Bear mountain and police were handing out tickets left and right for people calmly driving in or out with an exhaust.

NYC has microphones with cameras that will send you a ticket for a loud exhaust, but you can commit a myriad of serious crimes and be released same day with no bail. Rant over lol

It's time to go...God help this place.

    @Pazzo009 -

Our winter home is in Coastal Georgia and I unfortunately had to pay the TATV (Title Ad Valorem Tax) as this is where we registered our vehicles.

Needless to say, I was not pleased at having to do this. One thing to keep in mind is that the individuals that will issue you your new tags are used to pedestrian vehicles and are not familiar with exotics. As an example, when I was registering the Vantage, the clerk was unable to find anything in the Georgia database so she just went on AutoTrader and found another 'Aston' that was listed at $520K and was going to use that as her valuation. I had Aston Orlando send me an appraisal and this they finally accepted. You may want to consider doing this as well.

On the positive side, it appears that you will be settling just north of Atlanta and there are a plethora of car activities to keep you busy. I am quite envious of the large monthly car gatherings and organized trips that I see posted online. Another positive (at least on the coast) is that there are no required car inspections and only a rear license plate is issued. Without the idiotic inspection sticker and only a rear plate, your exotics will look as they were intended.

Wishing you only the best in your move to Georgia.

They've increased around 100% in the last 5 years... but it depends on weight and if it's a special plate. Registration is for 2 years and can be $125 to $300 or more. Sales tax on initial purchase is 8% to almost 9%

So I paid 8.125% on my 812 14 months ago, and now I perturbed that I have to pay again...but it is what it is.

This is a first. I’ve never heard of having to pay this kind of a tax when moving from one state to another. The sales tax has already been paid.

Then again, I’ve never had to transfer a car registration from one state to another.

it's not a sales tax. it is a title tax akin to a one time property tax.

it does screw over new transplants but it is one time on the purchase. it replace the ad valorem tax which went on yearly in perpetuity. i think my 575 was $1800 a year vs $20 now.

i haven't kept up with it but i think it screws over those that lease. rewards long term owners and those that trade in with dealers vs private party sale

Totally off the topic: I went to school at Hudson Valley Community College before going for my BSME. Great school, upstate (Troy). Graduated in 74, I bet a lot has changed since then

Another vote for Florida. Flat rate reg fee, low sales tax, and you get credit for trade-in, even if the trade-in is in another state. Create an LLC and register the car in that name, use a local Florida attorney as the registered agent with power of attorney. The attorney can register the car for you in Florida and you never even have to enter the state. You will need proof of Florida insurance but you can do that remote as well.

Tennessee has very easy going registration regulations. They never see your car and there's no inspection of any kind. Registration is pretty inexpensive and is just that. A registration. With a standard plate, I think it's less than $100. Sales tax is high so expect that but no further demands from the gov't except the annual registration. From what I remember, registering a personal car from out of state doesn't require anything special except a title fee, which may be $30.

A TN plate would blend pretty well with anywhere.
