    Hi,
I'm in EU and normally work with my local Ferrari dealer here. I'm relocating to the US and trying to order a 296 GTS from a US dealer and the experience has been strange. Want to check with people: what is the normal process for ordering a new Ferrari from US dealer?

    My process so far:
    * Contacted very well known dealer in city I'm moving to
    * We had a brief phone call, explained what I wanted
    * He said he'll send wiring instructions for $10K deposit to try to get a slot for a car

I asked if there was any paperwork on that says I'm paying a deposit, it's refundable, etc. and he said once he receives the funds he will issue me a bill of sale for the deposit.

This all seems very weird to me, and the experience so far is underwhelming.

Is this normal? I should blindly wire the money to the dealer's account?

    Thanks,
    Brett

whatever is suggested might paying the deposit by a European credit card (rather than wire) at least get you into consumer credit protection ?

also on day 1 in the city do a physical visit so that the salesman knows you are real and has less excuse to bump you down the allocation list

This is largely normal, yes. What city are you moving to? It may not be required once you're an established customer, but you're brand new to them and calling from out of the country, so to a degree, it's a step to filter out fakes, etc.

This would be normal process for someone in the USA.

It would be "normal" because usually the money transfer and the acknowledgement of receipt of the money would be issued within minutes of each other and across the table between customer and salesperson. You would walk out of the dealership with a piece of paper that acknowledged that they took your money.

In your case, it's a bit weird because you'll be wiring money in the good faith that the dealership will acknowledge receipt of the money and that they will send you the acknowledgement paperwork.

It all will probably be very straightforward and legitimate, but, yeah, it would be more comforting if you could somehow ensure acknowledgement of receipt of payment. I wonder if you can get your local dealership involved, where you give them the money, they issue you a receipt and they transfer the money on your behalf. ... I suppose that has other vulnerabilities.

Why not ask them for a invoice outlining exactly what the 10k is for and what terms come with it.

Then at least when you go to pay it, you have a record of exactly what, for who and the agreement you’re entering with them.

Id feel uneasy just wiring a bank account number with 10k with no upfront paperwork too.

Depends on how desperate you are to get the car.

There have been cases (albeit, rare) where dealers took $ in for orders and skipped town/closed shop (one example, I believe it was a Porsche dealer in FL).

So, always be careful wiring money...I would do it in person instead.

I vaguely recall hearing a rumor that Ferrari might be toying with the idea of considering thinking about maybe discussing some small possibility of their dealers not selling buyers' positions in the line.

I don't know if anything ever came of it, though.

… presumably you’re moving to the US to work here. Perhaps you can have a business colleague or friend hand-deliver your payment and immediately get the written receipt of payment from the dealership.

Thanks for the comments. The dealer is reputable and my EU dealer said it should be ok. I sent them the funds and they immediately sent paperwork afterwards. A bit "bass akwards" to me but look like I'm in the 296GTS queue now...

Brett , American Express is your friend, put the deposit on the card and be glad they didn’t ask for 20k.
