Has anyone found a modern gas shock/strut replacement for the Daytona hood support? If so, must any part of the Daytona be modified? (I had rather not modify anything on the car.)

Better yet, can the originals be rebuilt? Is there a source to rebuild the originals? Note: Kimmerly Brothers, which has been mentioned as a rebuild source, has gone out of business.......completely! I've tried the hydraulic rebuild shop at Quinn Catapillar, and they were interested in doing it, but after several days said they could not do it. They could not remove the snap ring on top , which IS very small.

You can try reoriginals, at www.reoriginals.com. Like many things on their web-site they are listed as not in stock. But one would hope that they will be in stock in a reasonable time.

Post on www.daytonaregistry.com. Someone there may have more up to date info on alternate sources.

    Good luck

Rod Drew "rebuilds" the hood struts. What that really means is he puts a smaller diamater strut inside the gutted Daytona "fat" struts. They perform great. Re-originals sometimes has reproduction struts that are very close, but not exact, to the originals. The pressure in the reproduction shocks are a bit stiff compared to the original units.

Boge also makes a strut, although much smaller in diameter to the original strut, that works great functionaly as well.

The above thoughts are from personal experience with all three.

I have a Maserati Bora and the struts for the rear lid look very similar to the Daytona. I expect a company that can rebuild the Daytona ones (or C4?) could rebuild the Bora ones too. I'll try Re-originals, but has anyone found other sources?

I’ve rebuilt several sets of OEM Daytona struts and fabricatereproduce Concours correct replacements for them also.
I have no experience with ones for Bora, but if they’re exactly same as Daytona, I might be able to help.

Thanks. I can send you some detailed photos when the car comes back from the shop. I just took it in for some minor repairs/touch up work yesterday, after one of the original 1973 tires blew up when I foolishly tried to drive the car. :( It now has five new XWXs.

If you still have the original hood strut you can have them rebuilt. Their are a couple of places in Canada that can rebuild them. Just Google gas spring, gas strut or lift support.

Frank at Strutwise did mine quite a few years ago. I just googled him, still in business up in British Columbia.

I've attached a photo of one of the Corte & Cosso struts. It's about 775 mm long (between eye centers), and 40mm in diameter with a 11.5mm shaft. It has this stamped in the body:
    Corte & Cosso
    ESP 99 05565

Frank at Strutwise is my go-to guy for all my strut work.
He has rebuilt struts for my Mercedes SL55, my Ferrari 458 spider and my Acura NSX.
When the wife and I visit Vancouver for vacations, I enjoy stopping by his shop and chatting him up. I will also drop off struts and pick them up on the way back home. He is truly a great guy and a good friend. On my last stop through, he even showed me a Daytona strut that he rebuilt. I had bever seen one before and all I could think about was how big it was....... I did appreciate the car it was from and the life it has lived.

He, like all of us is getting older every year and his health isn't the best. If you need his services, get it done sooner than later. Tomorrow might be too late.
I will miss him when that day comes.

    HTH,
    GG

In November, during a moment of health improvement for Frank.
Please note that it was utter alignment of the stars, and it does not mean you will get the same results.

When someone is ill, you have to take that into consideration, right? :)

    Regards, Alberto

Unfortunately the Canadian outfits took (read stole) my 2+ years of R & D after I commissioned one of them to produce components for my replacement struts, even after promising not to steal my ideas.
Goes to show how much or little someone’s word is worth.
