No. Not in aircraft world. Although you can always register the aircraft in a company name with a PO Box if you're worried about privacy. Your story about the P51 is very much a classic story of its time. I'm aware of several legendary pilots (one of whom I flew for for a while) and their adventures in the 60s / 70s. The bloke I flew for got in trouble for flying a P-51 from somewhere out in the country to Parafield with (legend has it) the guns still installed and functional! Not to mention zero time on type beforehand. What a great time it must have been to fly!
Gary's probably stopped counting, but it will still be counted somewhere! I stopped taking any notice years ago, and the only reason I know my hours is because I can log in to the work website and it tells me.
Like cars Steve it’s horses for courses..Probably the twin that did nothing for me was the Seminole..Bush strips my favourite was the Navajo because it was high off the ground and you had good prop clearance…1000m sealed strips you can’t go past the Cessna 400 series aircraft…Jets loved the DC8 although it was hard flying it in Cat 3 Europe..I also loved the 747 200/300 as well..Like cars they are all different but still good….
The company would have a record I guess Simon..It gets very complicated when you have been training for a long time as you sit on the jump seat , Seat and simulator..So while I still log the hours there’s a lot missed otherwise I’d have to have a PA..when you get to this stage in your career if you go for a job the hours are secondary..Primarily they are looking to see if you will fit into a team environment…In other words not a FIGJAM wanker…
Can anyone else see where this is going?? OLIO I heard about the convo at the GAD They were stupid comments by a stupid person
or blokes who flew in the 60s and 70s without a license . Come to think of it i wonder if my father had a pilots license .
Your story to me on the Rolls- Royce engines in the 747 compared to the PW was good and how you could pick the difference between the two. Still for me Queen of sky.
And yet all the biggest FIGJAM wankers we have ever had at my time in RFDS were happily snapped up by the airlines. Go figure. All the psych testing in the world means bugger all when people either know how to game it or have a personal connection to the people that matter.
DC-8 must have really been something. Competing with 707. Such a cool time. The only memory I have of watching DC-8s was in Singapore as a 10 year old. Brilliant. So you would have had FEs on the flight deck as well. How did you all feel when they were made redundant with the newer aircraft?
Whenever I fly overseas , I always spend time talking to the crew , and asking favourite aircraft , most if they have worked on them say the 747 , for its room, aisle room, galley, sleeping area ..all too young to remember 707s and DC8s.
FEs were the best Steve…And so were Load masters ( I could write a book about them )…Having an FE with you was like driving a Ferrari with your mechanic on board..And they had tools!..When I went to the 747 400 it’s was horrible! When the Shjt hit the fan your mechanic was gone…It was 2 pilots trying to figure things out..
Loved spending time in those places Rob..Most challenging airports would be Kai Tak , JFK RWY 13 L/R VOR in Shjt WX , Anchorage in the winter with strong winds and Libreville in West Africa in the old days..Freetown in Sierra Leone was a Shjt hole as well..
OK, I see why you’re not thrilled... Side note: I ended up in Concorde a couple of years ago (emergency appendix) with a bed in the old wing with an openable window looking out across garden and over the water - very nice!
Kai Tak would have been fun in the early years with a DC8/707? The olf Military airport at Mangalore near Seymour in the 1960s if Essendon was fogged out the 727s ect would land there , the Historic race club would run 1/4 mile sprints there ,such a fun day .....one year I got FTD in the Elfin Mono! we even had a car /plane drag race! Insurance killed that ..
Forgot his luggage, lost his torch, had 11 psi in the tyres and turned up in tracksuit paints with a male nurse as companion. Silly signature here to annoy KIAI
