That's my understanding. I don't see any benefit in vor NDB dme blah blah. In fact, I'm not even convinced I should bother with ILS. And I'm doing night.... I reckon that will be brilliant. Sig www.pless.com.au/mechanics.htm
If you plan to use Essendon as a base, I would go for the ILS. It may come in handy one day. A night rating will be awesome. A regional town or city lit up at night would be a sight to see!
I'm pretty sure I'll be doing my training from essendon. I have no idea where they do practice approaches. Can't they just do essendon or does everyone go to Ballarat? Regional town or bloody anywhere, I reckon. I want to do that vfr route around the rock as well. Would be incredible at dusk. Sig www.pless.com.au/mechanics.htm
Depending on the weather, Essendon traffic can’t always be run independently from Tullamarine traffic (due to being so close to each other) Approach ‘slots’ have to be booked for training and even then, are not always guaranteed. Ballarat is a popular place for RNAV training, because on the way back they plan via Avalon for some navaid training (VOR/DME) including ILS’s. Bendigo and Latrobe Valley are also popular for RNAV training. Inside 30Nm from Tullamarine, Point Cook is often used and Morrabbin is just a cluster f#*k.
Yeah agree..ILS a must but VOR / NDBs have been replaced by GPS & RNAV..Only used for raw data monitoring these days..
Thanks guys. That's the plan then.... Confirmed by REAL experts with real PRACTICAL experience. OLIO Anyway OMFG meteorology! Temperature lapse rate, DALR SALR dew point It's doing my head in and I'm only on page 2! Sig www.pless.com.au/mechanics.htm
Spot on. All our newest aircraft don’t even have NDBs in them (which annoys me as I can’t listen to the cricket / footy). Can’t remember last time I did a VOR, but do RNAVs and ILSs every day.
Met is the best subject of all! I took the study further than necessary just because I enjoyed it so much. In fact you could say I have far more knowledge about meteorology and climate than, say, Tim Flannery…
I'd like too go in a car ride with you and Gazza ,either driving ...I reckon your eyesight would be exceptional !
The new 777s don’t have NDB either Steve..VOR / NDB will all be decommissioned over the next couple of years with ILS following…Everything will be Sattelite based…
OMEGA off ground based stations globally…8 waypoints Lat / Long and you had to keep updating them flying globally on the DC8..Then they bought in GPS to fly the North Atlantic Tracks..So we taped a Garmin 100 to the dash of the old girl so we were legal…
All Sattelite based now Rob with computers that have large memories!..Very easy in that respect but just more things to manage..Lord Howe in the early days pre GPS was a nightmare…You used to launch from Sydney in the Navajo Chieftain and all Lord Howe had was a 2KW NDB…There were always large thunderstorms in the summer over the Tasman which made it very challenging to get a relative bearing on the needle…If you missed the island with your 10 passengers you were shark food…
Is Lord Howe a straight line out from Sydney , so to speak ? I still remember as a child so well flying there in 1968 on the Flying boat and looking out and seeing the Barrier reef. taking off from Rose Bay ,the landing and being picked up by a barge just outside of the island reef ..
Check Klinks atlas, don’t think the Great Barrier Reef goes that far south Silly signature here to annoy KIAI
Trolling! Apparently only actionable of its perceived that I'm doing it, even when I'm not. *eye roll * 3rd time I think. Unlike some, I won't go off crying that my feelings are hurt though. Sig www.pless.com.au/mechanics.htm
