Raising the right height is a fix that doesn't cost any money.

Bring back last years cars? Are you that salty that Red Bull and Ferrari are leading?

Yes, but Toto is Austrian & so is Glock so it seems fitting.

Schumacher admits he was battered by Baku’s F1 main straight
Mick Schumacher says he was left bruised by the seatbelts of his Haas Formula 1 car after last weekend’s Azerbaijan GP.

    https://www.autosport.com/f1/news/schumacher-admits-he-was-battered-by-bakus-f1-main-straight/10323364/

Haas has generally not suffered from excessive porpoising or bouncing this season, but in Baku all teams were affected to some degree.

Schumacher had the novel experience of not being unable to relax on the main straight as he had to deal with the bumps.

After trying to brace himself in the seat he found himself left with some unexpected aches and pains.

“I think everybody did to be honest, I think it was a very tough race,” he said when asked by Autosport if he’d experienced neck or back issues in Azerbaijan. “I started feeling my back I think 10-15 laps in. And honestly, by the end of it, it was quite tough, the back pain in general.

“The problem with it, is that with the porpoising and bouncing that we experienced with those heavy bumps that we had on the straight is that you lack the possibility to recover.

“Usually last year, you would have the straights to relax, whereas now you're constantly trying to tense, because you get so thrown around in the seat.

“Every lap, I got hit with the belts, and you started having the marks here and here, and also in the crotch belts. So it's a very different type of muscles that you use, which I guess is something one has to get used to.

“But also I think it's something we shouldn't have to get used to, because I think they will have an effect in some years’ time. I've heard a story about a driver driving in the 70s or 80s when they had the same issues with porpoising where the driver actually had to retire from F1 because he was so much in back pain from it.

“So it's definitely something that they will have to have a look at. And I'm sure F1 and FIA are doing their best to try and solve it.”

    A fix isn't a solution, it's simply a bodge.

The solution is a complete redesign after a deep study of the problem.

It worked for Red Bull. In 2021 discussions were held regarding the porpoising and FIA proposed a fix. Mercedes and other teams voted against it.

Porpoising is a side effect of using strong ground effect. The way to fight it is by managing the ride height.

If an engine keeps blowing up, you turn down the revs. It's not a bodge. It's accepting the limitations.

Design a bad car that won't work when it's slammed to the ground isn't the rules problem. It's a design fault of the engineers. NOT the FIA rules.

How is it so hard to understand????

The irony would be that the measures of vertical accelaration and the close examination of the "plank" brought by the FIA could also reveal that Red Bull is above what is permissible.

They have experienced some "bouncing" too, but have kept quiet. Gasly at AT has been vocal about it, to Marko's displeasure.

Gasly drives an Alpha Tauri, not a Red Bull. 2 entirely different cars.

RBR has some of the lowest bouncing and porpoising, so stand to lose the least.

Has the FIA been measuring the plank thickness on all cars after each race ?

Mercedes could be on the wafer thin side ;)

I agree with Bas - if the teams and the FIA want to protect the drivers they need to increase the min ride height. If Red Bull have a better handle on things then they will be least disavantaged (much as I would like them to be closer to the pack). Electronics are pretty sophisticated these days, so it would be easy to install FIA sensors on all cars and measure dynamic ride heights.

(BTW, horses are actually a pretty poor design in many respects and camels are much better optimised for the desert conditions they generally live in).

So they could. I can't see the problem. It's obvious that they haven't done a good job with their car in 2022.

Just like I can't understand why Red Bull is so against the indroduction of new directives, since they pretend they aren't concerned by porpoising. What do they have to fear ?

So why is Horner so paranoid about a rule change then?

I wouldn't say paranoid. Just against a mid season rule change.

If the rule change is as expected, Red Bull to be minimally affected and Ferrari/Mercedes a lot more, it's a rather lonely rest of the season for RBR. Perhaps, just maybe, they liked the competition?

In previous years he's also been against mid season tyre changes, wing changes.

CH seems more concerned about the principal of rule changes, because some teams are doing a poor job.

    He has a point.

They should have been made mandatory equipment on F1 cars many years ago, just like fuel flow sensors have been.

If you think the whole fuel flow meter issue was so contentious—remember the fuel spike that got a Red Bull DQ’d and of course the whole mystery around Ferrari—just image the s/show when a car gets DQ’d from the sensor reading a hard bump over a curb out something.

Total lack of common sense if they impose rules based on these sensors. Sensors, which BTW, are meant to also read impact loads and other stuff but—as sensors do—may not be adequate to accurately measure certain vibration frequencies.

If they want to control this bouncing that can just raise the floor edges for next year and live with the rules they have for this year after creating this mess.

Horner is just an insecure whiner, and he never stops. He is otherwise a good team manager, but should put a sock in it.

After years of trying, his team has finally beaten his nemesis, Mercedes, in a convincing manner.

Is he afraid of Red Bull dominating ? Doesn't he enjoy success? I really don't understand the guy.

The ECU has measured this data already for years and they've been able to use the devices in the ears of drivers (iirc used to measure G during a crash) for a good few years as well.

They kind of did! That's why merc will fall further behind while now being forced to protect their drivers. If everyone was forced to a higher rideheight to stop porpoising merc wins an advantage. FIA smarter than that. Teams only have to raise RH if porpose exceeds a mathematical limit which it does on merc car so they are screwed. Merc can only run low if tracks like pool table smooth. That's fair! 2022 rules are intact with an extra safety addendum. For all the bashing of the FIA this time they nailed it...IMO.

crotch belts OUCH! that is ummmm Delicate matter. I remember having a loose Crotch belt in F-Renault in 1990.... I thought it was tight but was caught on the fold of my suit, so when I pulled the suit up, it was loose - and started to slide down under braking... not fun.... no wonder I don't have kids.
