You may be right, but voting responsibly is the only way to keep that at bay. That's why we have the GDPR in Europe, only a first step, but a step in the right direction.

You are traced on your computer, your phone, your Alexa, Google etc etc etc way more than you know, and MUCH more accurately than in the car. I don't see EVs as a vital part of this, any new car going forward is going to be connected.

But if it could keep people from driving impaired, without a license, without proper insurance then it could worth something. I know people are scared that it can/will be used to monitor speed and other simple traffic violations, and I'm diffidently not in favor of that, but lets be honest, it would make sense to have as a parole kind of thing for repeat speed violators.

Agreed, though it's a good thing that they don't have 22 yearly races to determine what tells time better. Nor do they have popular blogs/magazines testing the time-keeping accuracy every day.

A $100K Patek (c'mon you should be saying 1 million Richard Mille) vs say a $50 atomic watch.

    That's the difference.

    ***

Some folks say those are simply all bragging rights.

    You're absolutely right.

Do you think this doesn't matter for a person willing to drop a few million on a car they don't plan to drive?

Yes, it's all about NVH. (I'll add smell in there too)

There is nothing that violates the law of physics that says any EV can't replicate any of that.

The truth is folks are whinging about the 'purity' or other words 'realness' of that NVH.

Now, I don't know how one could measure vibration/harshness as fake in one car vs another - but whatever.

Let's hone in on smell. Specifically, what are we talking about? Exhaust smell? I appreciate the aroma, but within reason - I liken it to perfume. At a point - it's TOO MUCH. Besides, at speed inside my Ferrari, it's a light smell - nothing an atomizer can't reproduce if you have a jonesing for it.

Now I understand there are those that LOVE to be bathed in exhaust smell, what can I say - I never understood the coal-rolling crowd - it gives me a headache and makes me nauseous. Like putting your mouth to a tailpipe? To each their own.

This brings us to sound. I've been around the car scene to know you have two scenarios.

    1) Folks that like the sound for themselves
    2) Folks that like to rev so everybody and their mom hears it

Outside some Cars and Coffee, I'm sorry to burst folks bubbles here, but 95% of folks roll their eyes and look at you with NEGATIVE esteem when you commit to the obnoxious loud drive bay.

    On the flip side?

As much as folks decry and make fun of the Star Wars/Star Trek sound, every instance I've seen it 'revved' - it made folks ooooh and awww in appreciation. If you don't agree, you need to go to South Beach Miami on a Friday/Saturday night. I witnessed this positive reaction, especially from women...*

Why this would surprise anyone is beyond me, given we live in a digital world.

    ***

One caveat* - This applies to major metropolitan and urban cities. I will be the first to admit, that I don't live in a rural area where social mores are probably very distinct. I'm sure in some areas, say like certain regions of Appalachians, a coal-rolling mad max steam rollers are judged with the utmost admiration. In fact, the louder and more coarse - the better.

Who am I to judge? They don't affect me, so I say more power to them! In fact, I spent time explaining to many young car enthusiasts the allure of a loud exhaust vs the digital mechanization of the future.

I'll report it's not really having an effect on them.

GDPR means nothing in terms of geofencing, active speed limiters, etc, they do not need to know who you are at all.

As for "protection' against various infractions of the law, I think you are giving up way too much of your freedom for very limited benefits, no thanks.

I used to hold your view. I used to think that we may be a bit paranoid about the flouting of mores.

    I used to.

When did an electric motor start having geofencing and speed limiters as standard?

Talk about going into the deep end.

I hurt your feelings huh? Feel free to put me on ignore if your find my rebuttals to your proclamations to much to bear. Better yet, if you want flag my reply for moderation review, I encourage it.

If you still want to play, then explain to me what is the OP about? Ferrari has been around for 75 years. What exact time period do you both want us to go “back to?”

Yup the 296? No emotions. Zip, null, nada. As exciting as a toaster.

    ROFL.

I’m the one out of touch here?

I never understood this need to love your car so much that you decry others? Must be algorithmic programming.

Your preference, but not mine. I might buy a EV as an appliance someday. As a fun car, NFW.

Where did I say you have to buy one? I thought you asked me why I brought up 9mpg? Also, where did I say EVs are my preference? I've always maintained I like both.

Seems a lot of assumptions and projections going on here.

    **

Besides, who am I to say you are wrong if you feel say all EVs say like a Porsche Mission R is a boring car, on the contrary, I think you should declare that loud and proud every chance you get.

In fact, your sentiments will age REALLY well say 10 - 20, or 30 years from now.

    :)

It's after all fact, that most people will figure out one day that all EVs now and into the future are boring no matter what. Isn't it so obvious?!

You keep bringing up straw man arguments to support EVs. Personally, I don't care. I might buy one as an appliance if they improve, but never as a fun car. Then again, it is highly unlikely I will buy any new sports car in the future. I'm going to instead go back in time and buy cool cars I never had back then. For example, I'm picking up a 1998 e36 M3. I'm looking forward to it. I could care less about 0-60.

They can't give me a speeding ticket if they don't know who I am.

Freedom is a funny thing. I'm willing to give up a little personal freedom for the greater good, in this case, it is no skin of my back if we can stop very dangerous behavior among the few. We already do on many levels and it works great.

Lately I have a hard time seeing the US as the land of the free. Don't get me wrong, I love the US and I love the diversity of the different states that have their own individual charm, and I love the overwhelming hospitality of every individual American I ever had the pleasure to get to know. But something is not working on a more collective level and I would claim that in general we feel and are more free in Denmark/Scandinavia. BUT this is not 'The end of Ferrari, as we know it'.

I understand what you are saying. My personal experience with a e36 M3 and many other similar cars is that I very fast get tired of them. It quickly becomes 'been there done that' to me. They are fun for track day, but beyond that, they are just over hyped. Today, when I get the itch for a certain modern vintage car, I find someone I can rent it from.

Yeah, 4 tires are better than 2, but you never forget your first love. I started riding a motorcycle when I was 14.

If the prospect of driving an electric Ferrari excites anyone, then riding in a Greyhound bus must be your idea of happy motoring. Good grief!

Yes, the "old guy in the room" remembers the sheer joy of driving a front-engine V-12 Ferrari through the Allegheny Mountains with the windows rolled down, listening to the sound of those lovely 3 liters echoing back and the positive, precise feel of the controls. No "driver aids", no power steering, no air conditioning, not even a radio to disturb the sensation of being one with the car. Few cars generate this profound experience. To me, a car is more than simply transportation.

My friend, an automotive stylist and Ferrari enthusiast once remarked that the Berlinetta Boxer was the last Ferrari that felt directly connected to the driver.

Rose colored memories my friend. :) The last car to truly feel connected to the driver was the Model A. You had to hand crank it to get it started...

Ferrari drivers typically talk about the sound of the car but don't talk about how the car actually drives. Because few actually drive their cars. Alot of those "no drivers aids" cars with past body work.. if you know what i mean. :) That dated V12 machine you were cruising in is known for its sound, beauty and rarity. Not its handling. A Kia Forte stays on the road better..

Now I go back to reminiscing about my first girlfriend, who was more beautiful and eloquent and intelligent than any other woman in the world. Oh my is this a picture of her... ? ;)
