The Timing Belt Myth?

I just changed my timing belts. I waited 7 years, miles were less than 12,000. One reason to change every 3 or 5 years is not only to replace the timing belts but to inspect the other critical components. One of my belt tensioner bearing oil seals had failed and the bearing was starting to make noise when I spun it by hand. Not bad yet. But it wouldn't have taken much longer. Replaced with Hill Engineering bearings this time.
Also, needed a lower cam bearing and seal. I replace all the cam seals while I'm there.
Even if your belts aren't bad, lots of stuff needs to be inspected.
I will probably change the belts at 5 years next time.

Now the important question. Which oil should I use

 

For having participated in a thread about timing belts, you should be fined. Baiting with question about oil is punished by banishment...

My Modial was purchased by the previous owner with a broken belt by someone who either didn't know, or didn't head the warnings. .

 

I have personally known two 308's with broken belts.

 

And it's true, they break, it's not just a myth to sell unneeded service.

 

I love how this topic can arise endlessly.

Interference engines are a thing, and rubber degradation is a thing.

You make educated guesses as an owner, and as a BUYER, you wail and gnash your teeth to try to get a discount.
