I agree. Mine is Blu Sera - at least that is what I was told!

John B - did you buy your car from RPM VT? If so, I saw and drove that car. It was very nice. In person, the color to my eye looked the same as the one I own. But I agree my car looks lighter than yours in photos and the image I posted is what the car looks like in person.

Thanks. Yes, the rear valance is 512BBi. The rear clam does identify it as a carb 512BB along with the front valance, picture posted elsewhere.

Ive had some claim that their late carb car came with the BBi rear valance from new, swore up and down. It's possible, anything is possible with a Ferrari but without paper work supporting it or a picture from new it would be considered wrong.

Interesting. What is the chassis number of @FFmaybe's car? From Nathan Beehl's great Boxer book the last 21 512 BB chassis numbers are:

    37587
    37591
    37715
    37717
    37719
    37721
    37759
    37795
    37859
    37861
    37863
    37881
    37889
    38005
    38007
    38009
    38011
    38059
    38115
    38117
    38119

Does anyone have pictures of the rear of any of the above 512BBs?

There should be some injected cars overlapping with those BB's just as there were a handful of 365's built after the first BB512. That could justify the 2 fog lamp bumper.

According to the register in Nathan's book none of the 512 BB chassis numbers overlap into the BB512i range whereas the last 3 365 GT4 BBs overlap into the 512 BB chassis number range, which are 19323, 19343 and 19445. Also the first 512 BB, chassis #19271 is within the 365 GT4 BB range. The second 512 BB is 19677. Therefore, in short, 512 BB 19271 is the only odd one within the 365 GT4 BB range.

I'll look at my chassis number list this weekend, I have some on there that aren't in Nathans book.

There are actually a few 1981 512 BBs with the later 512BBi type valance with the fog lights.

Unfortunately no chassis numbers but they are 1981 512 BBs with Webers. See here and here.

Part of the problem is putting the injected bumper on wasn't an uncommon modification and it was easier to get when undoing a DOT conversion. TRX wheels on a BB was another upgrade people did, I've seen it before. Its like the carb 308 guys with 14" rims scrounging for 16" QV wheels for the later look. Judges always say refer to the parts book if in doubt. I don't have an 81 BB parts book but that would be the place to look and if its not there and the judges aren't used to seeing it they would deduct accordingly. Me, I would need to see the parts book and see a few one owner examples to be a believer.

    Good day Paul,

Just a FYI... I just checked on Eurospares and Ferrari UK and both of their online parts catalogs show different part numbers ( BB is 50301308, and BBi is 60724910) for the Boxer's rear Bumper/valance.

    BB
    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Ferrari/512/512_BB/PartDiagrams/102/Body_Shell_-_Outer_Elements
    https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/ferrari/50301308?id=87950

    BBi
    https://www.eurospares.co.uk/Ferrari/512/512_BBi/PartDiagrams/101/Body_Shell_-_Outer_Elements
    https://www.ferrariparts.co.uk/part/ferrari/60724910?id=63481

In fact Ferrari UK's page shows what car's each part number is applicable and each part is only associated with the respective car. Lastly, both types are currently in stock

    Cheers,

    Sam

I can see why people would change their wheels to fit the TRX tyres as they may have thought at the time it would improve the handling having larger diameter wheels and lower profile tyres, but I can't see why people would go to the trouble and expense of changing/updating the rear valance for the minor difference of having the fog lights where they are. There does seem to be quite a few 1981 512BBs with the later rear valance of the BB512i. We need to see more of the latest/last 512BBs with the chassis numbers, and/or within the range listed in my previous post to know for sure.

The parts they say are in stock will be reproduced not original. I have bought them before which is how I found out. Same with 308 euro rear lower quarter panel boxes.

    Good day Paul,

Understood. That said I would have been highly surprised if they were NOS... However, they do have some NOS on some parts for some cars, as I was able to score a original door mirror and door lock cylinders (with keys) for my 365 GT4 2+2... and for very reasonable cost I might add (I simply had to provide proof that I owned the car).

My point was that the online parts catalog show two different parts and indicate which cars that are for. That is not to say that some level of interchange occurred at the factory, however, it would be tough to prove this was the case unless there were period docs/pics showing the change, as the parts book state otherwise.

    Cheers,

    Sam

I know this is a “value” thread but since we were discussing the color of the car I thought I’d include an overhead shot I took today
