Would you trade your 3x8 for a newer Ferrari?

No— am not really into Ferraris generally but am totally into my two favorite classic cars— my Dino and my 328.

 

And a couple more hours to FIND a charging station with the connection you need since there is no standard type.

 

No....I was shopping for a black 355 when I stumbled upon a black/tan 328 that insisted on following me home. I truly love everything bout the 328 and, at this point, would not trade it for the 355.

 

Certainly not. I'm actually interested in going in the opposite direction and trading the 348TB in for a 3x8GTB in any color but gray or white (hint hint to anyone).

 

A manual 355 GTS and 812 Superfast are the only other Fcars that appeal to me. But my 308 gets more looks than any of those when I go somewhere and one of them is there as well (if that sort of things matters to you). Now, a Dino 246... that's a whole 'nother story.

A couple of years ago I would have agreed completely. But with current range capability, there is no trip I ever take nowadays in my 328 that would exceed E-car range. So it would never be charged except at home. Back when the 328 was my only car, the E-car range would have been too annoying to deal with but that use of my 328 ended in '16 and the longest drive the car typically makes now is right around 200 miles. And most days when I drive it, it's around 50-60 miles.

Re "upgrading" my 328- the most fun I ever had in a Ferrari was for a week in a rental 1978 308 in Hawaii. I have never experienced the same "fun" since then. Whether it was the car (carbs), the location, or "that" time in my life, I'm not sure but I admit that a pre-injection 308 has some appeal! I could MAYBE consider that...or, as was mentioned earlier, the straight trade for a 288 GTO!

 

I agree I would trade for a 288 GTO or F40, but other than that I wouldn't. Newer Ferraris (and almost any new car) do everything better than the 308. I don't care. I'm not chasing horsepower/performance with the 308, although I certainly wouldn't turn down another 50hp. The body style really has very few rivals, totally iconic. I also like how low it is. New Ferraris are so big.

You guys can hate on electric cars all you want, but my BEV goes 0-60 in 4.5-ish seconds and it's not hardly a "performance" car. Having ICE for ultimate performance is on the wane. (Search Youtube for "2022 Dodge Charger Jailbreak vs Lucid Air GT Performance) Now ICE provides a visceral and emotional experience - the 308 does that part just fine - but it's going to be popular with the old guys who remember when gasoline power was king.

 

Well that stinks, I was about to sell two of them for $20k each....a gray and a white.

 

I've been a car guy for over half a century. Every car guy wants a Ferrari at some point.
I considered a 360, but I've always loved the 308 and I'm very glad I bought a QV instead. Being able to work on them is a key consideration for me. I'm fortunate to have the two "classic" cars I'd always wanted: the 308 and a Series 1 Jaguar E-type OTS. Modern Ferraris hold little appeal for me. My "appliance" is a 911 C4S with the incredible PDK. In my opinion, simply a better and less expensive and less troublesome car than modern Ferraris.

 

That may be true, but ICE engines today are the steam engines of the 1940’s, outperformed and on the way out.

It’s also possible that industrialised civilisation may be on the way out, and technology may soon slam into reverse - from EV’s, back to ICE’s, then coal, the horse…every step along the way takes us back to a simpler technology, requiring more human input, more self-sufficiency, and less reliance on millions of lines of cryptic code, nano-circuitry and ultra-complex globalised supply chains. Now I think of it, the preference for a gated shifter is a good metaphor for the state of the planet

 

I did it. And generally I think its been great. I went from a 1986 328 GTS - which I loved it was a great car. to a 2008 599 GTB. totally different animals, and love it. they are still both quirky enough that you know you are in a Ferrari, but so different that its still interesting. the 328 was great on a mountain road, you could use lots of it all the time. however in traffic in Atlanta - it was terrible and I found my self slowly not using the car as much - its not fun sweating profusely in 100F traffic with the AC on full, in the blistering sun..... not to mention the toll it takes on the car. Mechanically my car was in great shape, but still had the odd electrical issues here and there.

the 599- you have none of that so far, its cool, its easy to live with and does not mind traffic when its hot. However - you have to always be on your toes, as its easy to creep into triple-digit speeds without even thinking of it on the highway. 95mph seems like 40. literally. If you go on track - watch out. It's a hand full... but its amazing to live with and be in. the looks, however - not as beautiful. I don't know if I get any looks - as I don't pay attention anymore.... I know in the 328 everyone knew it was a Ferrari... the 599- I think others think it could be a lexus.... then comes Maintenance... it can be steep, but so far its been sparce. New radiator and TGK valves - not cheap, but annual service is $2k... and that has been it in 3 years. Having had 308's and 328's in the past, I was spending comparably more on the car with values going down. I'm sure the 599 - will eventually go down as well... the current up tick cant last for ever... my advice enjoy what you have .... time is short.

 

If industrial civilization is on the way out. Cars are the last of our worries. Mass starvation and death will be the result. You can't sustain 10 billion people with anything but technology. You can't hunt and gather or subsistance farm enough food. Just look to Sri Lanka for a preview of that future. The uni-bomber's distopian anti-technology future fanasy is certain death.

 

I’ve loved the 3x8 as far as I can remember. And I don’t consider to replace it ever. But yes I would have any newer Ferrari without replacing my 328.

The only car I'd be looking to add next to the manual 355B would be a 328 GTB. Always thought a 328 would be my "starter" Ferrari, ended up being a 355 with no regrets there...but I do still want a 328.

 

No. I’ve been frustrated with my ‘78 GTS, but that’s not her fault. Fault goes to aging components and my lack of skill to repair, replace or clean though I have improved significantly.

I still believe the Pininfarina 308s are the most beautiful cars ever produced. I sold my ‘77 GTB in 2003. It was a colossal mistake. I will never make that mistake, again.

 

I will never sell my 89 328 , I could care less how fast your ev is, I will stick to my 1/32 Scalextrics , they are a lot more fun. I do plan on owning another Ferrari, Im dreaming of a 488 GTB at some point, we shall see. If anyone thinks their tesla played out is so so fast, I can always jump on the 1400 and you will know what fast really means !!! lol Or the V4S for that matter . ICEs will be around for the foreseeable future, no matter what all the car commercials are trying to push down our throats.

I don't know how many companies made steam cars; maybe all the others went out of business in '05 but Stanley Steamers were in production until the company folded in 1924!

Not sure about that... the Tesla Plaid in stock form can run off 9.5s in the quarter and achieve a top speed of 175 mph. Slightly modded versions have done the quarter in the mid 8's. With the factory 'governor' software overridden, a factory Tesla Plaid hit 216 MPH earlier this year. The testers said that the car could have gone faster if they'd have had a longer test track.

Agreed. Had a ride in a friends Plaid and for me it is outside of the “thrilling” category for acceleration and into the “uncomfortable” category. The interval acceleration from say 30 to 70mph is perhaps even more so.

I have a 79 carbed GTS. Just added a 2004 360 in TDF blue. I like rack car for specific reasons. For shorter trips and the raw experience, it’s the 308 all day. For taking the wife on trips and longer excursions, it’s the 360. A/C is critical here in Texas!
Have you all seen the temps here in Texas lately!!

I meant steam trains not cars. Don’t think steam cars were ever that important

 

Steam locomotives were still being made in the US through the 1940's; they were still being made in England in the 1960's. They were used into the '80s. Re Steam car, the Stanley Steamer set the automobile speed record in 1906 - 127 MPH. They were reasonably popular until the electric starter appeared in quantity on ICE cars.
