I live in Sicily and am trying to get my 1986 328 appraised so I can get "full coverage" insurance on it, mostly for when I ship it back. Being a US Government employee stationed here there are only 2 insurance companies we can use here, GEICO and USAA, and an appraisal is needed for valuation for the policy. I am trying to see if they will take the bill of sale. I talked to the Ferrari/Maserati dealership and they told me to go to the European site AUTOSCOUT24.IT for valuation, but that only goes back to 2002. Is there anyone who knows how I would do that over here or is there somewhere online for European cars (Eurospec) to get an appraisal done?

I imagine the requirement to go through those two companies is for driving it around, but you might want to switch to Hagerty when it comes time to ship it home and drive it in the USA. They insure to "agreed value" which makes more sense for these types of cars. I would not trust USAA or Geico to properly value the car and make you whole if there was a catastrophic loss or total loss. They are a different type of insurer.

When I insured with Hagerty, the "agreed value" of my 328 was based on my assessment of total costs (what I paid for car plus shipping, title taxes, restoration/repairs, etc) and using Hagerty's valuations based on condition (which are available on their website -- you need to make a web account but no obligation to buy a policy from them). Agreed value was about $15K more than what I paid, and in the event of a total loss I'd come out about even. If market values were to climb dramatically in the future, I'd want to make an adjustment upward to cover appreciation. Hagerty is setup to handle all of that.

If you need an appraisal, go straight to the big dog:

    Automotive Valuation Services

This is Donald Osborne's company, you can't really get bette than that. They service the US and Europe, so that should work for you.

I recently switched from Haggerty to Grundy................Grundy was half what I have been paying for many years with an agreed value.

Interesting! My insurance with Hagerty renews in October, so I just got a quote from Grundy online. Turns out, Grundy is $384 more annually for me.
