Hello! I recently purchased a 97 Spider and I love it! I’m OCD and like to have all my cars looking brand new so I’ve been fixing minor little things that are wrong with it including the broken ashtray.

Instead of buying a new or used one, I decided to 3D print one since a replacement is astronomically priced…

I thought I’d share the progress. So far the design, fitment and operation is like OEM. I strengthened and reinforced the weak areas that are prone to breaking and cracking.

The only thing cosmetically different than OEM is I removed the clear light fixture that normally sits in the top left corner from the 3D printed model since I couldn’t remove the clear housing from the stock ashtray without breaking it. It appears to be glued in there. If I can find a solution for a replacement bulb housing, I can add it back to the model.

I printed this out of PLA on an Ender 3. Total print time is 8.5hr with 20% infill. Here’s some pics :D

Great design job of a complex part. Are you going to publish the design someplace or keep all this fabulous work to yourself?

What printer did you use? What design software?

Ya, I think I may share the file on thingiverse or something.

I used Fusion. Printed on an Ender 3 in PLA.

Are you supposed to send them smooth and paint or anything before you put them on? Has a rather raw look off the printer no?

I would love to make one. I have my 3D set up now running a few parts.
Dont need one just want to make one. Have not done anything that complex yet.
    I'd give it away
    :)

I suppose it would be up to the person if they want to do any finish work to make it look more OEM. I'm sanding and painting mine so it matches the rest of the interior. I'll post pics shortly.

Very nice model, great work. I would be very keen to have a play with it to make it suit the 348.

Thank you Thank you for putting that up
Now with the basic dimensions I cant wait to see how folks start to customize it. I have several ideas on modding it

    Thank you Thank you :)

That's actually an interesting point - Unless your car is a concours contender, how many people actually use the ashtray?

In this day and age, I would have thought that updating the ashtray to a phone charging docking station would be far more useful.

Geeze I am having to much fun geeking out LOL
Got it imported to a workable file. Just ordered some coils to make a wireless charger docking station and whatever comes to mind.
I will share all my sketches.
This stuff needs to be public for all with the 3D printers in the world.

Looking forward to what you come up with! Just a note to everyone printing these, don’t use PLA. I took the car out this weekend and parked it in the hot sun and the ashtray deformed. The lid no longer opens and closes properly. I think ABS would be a better choice.

That sucks. Sun has always been hard on these cars. Great work though and can’t wait to see next version.

This is going to be a problem with any thermoplastic as cars get hot. In some cases, a better use of 3D printing is to create a mold and then cast the part using a thermoset urethane. These materials can not only take the heat, they are incredibly strong and resistant to abrasion. Creating a mold is a bit more complex but not beyond the average tinkerer. I made a urethane adapter for the 360 to allow the use of cheap throttle bodies by 3D printing the mold.

A simple way to make a mold for a part like this is to print and finish the part (aka plug), then make a silicone or urethane mold from the plug before casting the finished part in urethane. Using a flexible material for the mold allows more complex shapes with undercuts to be cast.

Here are the molds for the adapter I made:

    And the adapter itself:

The urethane material I used for this adapter can take up to 350F without deformation or loss of material properties. I think that's good enough.

You could have it printed by a 3D printing service. They have allot of different materials to choose from. I did this for a micro PC case since my printer only does PLA.

WOW! That's amazing! Thanks for the tip, I may try something like this. I assume you had to do a lot of finish work on the 3D printed surface to get rid of the layer lines?
