I see you are looking at FJ Cruisers Steve. Like you, I'm rather fond of my Rangies but if you are getting anything beyond a P38, you got to avoid the BMW engine. L322 have transmission issues too if you go for the diesel. I wish I could recommend au early w460 Merc Gwagon but $40k for crap example to $70K for a great one, too expensive for what they are. So I think a FJ Cruiser is really good quirky alternative - with the right mods, they can look good. Very reliable and no main issues that I'm aware of. I also think a current model (GJ) Suzuki Jimny would be ideal for your purposes - but they are so popular that they are hard to come across and don't depreciate. Having said all this, all you really want is cheap 4x4 for cruising around your beach palace - so never forget that original intent.
What do you need the prospective 4wd to do Steve? If you're going to use it as a ute then any wagon isn't going to cut it I'd have thought,a dualcab would be an option with a dropside tray for maximum practicality. The FJ is a petrol only guzzler as is any petrol 4wd BUT petrol is between 20 and 30 cents cheaper (up here today) than diesel...1.79 ulp/2.09 dies.
Actually I only posted that as it came up as the most expensive car on Carsales and thought it was amusing! You are both right though - all we need is a cheap 4x4 to pull a boat in and out of the water and occasionally run into town (30 min away). Ideally I’d also like to leave it at Whyalla airport so when we fly in it’s there ready to use. The Hilux the previous owner left us is a dual cab and I’ll probably just get it re-registered and serviced and use that for now. Interestingly it has a tow bar and a winch on the front as well. Apparently it was the last model Hilux you could do that with.
Obviously used as you want to,for those not adept at trailer reversing it's an ideal setup and you own it!
Expected to see Wes yesterday at the Porsche 70th anniversary display at Southbank. Good turnout of cars considering the weather; amazed at the number of 365s (at least a couple of which were real). Again, the general public were showing much more interest in the old cars than the modern ones... Way too many over restored cars though, IMHO. The concours judges looked frazzled.

Chin, Did you see the 1957 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham amongst the Caddy's? Extremely rare and beautiful car. Regret I didn't take a photo. Also the 1930 V16, a 100 point restoration.
I’m just sad I’m missing all the fun due to COVID gout and house renovations, roll on September [emoji12]
I did. I thought wow amazing.. there’s a similar one next to it and a few photographers.. Unfortunately I don’t know enough to appreciate them
Hope you are able to join some of the fun soon better in Sept anyway as the weather will be nicer too. Take care
