Back to the future gearbox?

The launch of the Koenigsegg CC850 was extremely fascinating.

I've noticed other interesting posts and polls (such as would you buy a modern 'heritage' Ferrari? https://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/threads/would-you-buy-a-modern-heritage-ferrari-if-ferrari-made-it.663341/)

But this thing blew my mind -- is this 'too synthetic' or is this the way of the future where you can have 9 gears of multi-clutch 10ms shifting but also get more involved and row if you want to...

I think having this as an option especially if the mechanicals are identical is a no-brainer -- imagine an 812 like this... mamma mia...

yeah there is an interesting thing going on right now. Pagani also announced that manual transmissions are where they are going. The emotional experience of these cars is far more important than the performance specs. I really don’t care how many milliseconds faster or slower I am compared to a Plaid.

The nature of a DCT makes it perfect for a third pedal. It is already a manual transmission, 2 of them mated together, with an electronic clutch. Shoehorn a third pedal and override the electronic shifter on demand is not a big engineering effort.

 

Yeah, this blew my mind as well!! Love to see developments like this where the solution is "all of the above."

It wouldn't be possible to convert a DCT to manual..

 

To me it sounds like they are moving the flappy paddles from the steering wheel to a leaver in the center of the consul, still all computer chips and micro switches....

My thinking as well. I haven't read about the engineering, but I assume there's nothing actually being moved by the clutch or shifter - just computer signals that share information with the transmission when they are utilized (clutch + 0 shifting = drop revs, clutch + shifting = depending on shifting up/down, drop/raise revs incrementally based on throttle position and select next gear up/down, etc).

 

Not convert but design it using the same principles, and it sounds like Koenigsegg did it. That new transmission has 3 sets of gears and 3 clutches for 9 gears total but 6 forward gears when driving. No traditional flywheel and clutch, it is a hydraulic link. It may not be a DCT in a strict sense but by engineering it with different gear sets not directly connected front to back, they are very similar concepts. I am still learning as I read about it but they definitely get credit for doing something remarkable.

 

Nope. You're still doing nothing more than "requesting" that the compute gives you 4th gear. You won't feel that satisfying mechanical "click into gear" we want as part of our engagement. Your left foot is "requesting" clutch engagement/disengagement.
"Your shifts" will always be flawless. I doubt that the level of clutch engagement will be nuanced at all (no different than any other automanual out there).

It's a video game shifting experience, for people who have never experienced mechanical involvement, but will think they are because they have no reference point.
