Tim, is your sense that the strength is concentrated in modern (F40 and later) supercars or across the board?

 

Yes and no. On the whole the market has less interest in pre 1970 cars than at any point since the mid 1980s. But $140mm for the Merc 300SLR Coupe, $13 mm for a Talbot teardrop at Gooding Amelia and $9 mm for a Merc 540K special roadster and Hispano were huge money. Further the 412S and Maser 450S at RM are almost guaranteed to go for huge money and it remains that even a poor GTO is now a $50 - 60 mm buy. What I am seeing is that common pre 1970s collectors cars are becoming a tough sell but anything truly rare (less than say 100 units) is still strong and will continue to be. And why not, the best and rarest will get you into Pebble Beach or Villa Erba or the GTO tours or any other billionaires club you want to be a part of, the rest won't. In the meantime the new money is often owned by people under the age of 50 who have no childhood memories of any classic and for them a 1980s/ 90s supercar or even a Playstation Gran Turismo JDM classic is where their heart and money is at

Bonhams seems to have left a lot of money on the table with a $6.3mm bid on the Jag and $2.5 mm on the Atalante and $1.1 - 1.3 mm for the Alfa 6C1750 and 33TT12 but maybe it was a lightfitting bidding or maybe they were legit and a post block sale will be achieved for both

Elsewhere I see that Broad Arrows is not listing the Merc and 250GT Tour de France among their still available list so I assume they were also post block sales!

RM results 19/8/22

RM had the mighty Oscar Davis collection along with a selection of fine cars and sold twenty cars for more than a million. Prices were a bit all over the shop with a fine $6 mm for the Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet Series I, $7 mm for the Talbot-Lago and $8 mm for the Ferrari 500TRC but the Maserati 450S doing no better than $6.9. Still $78 mm is a very good result. RM has sold $106 mm so far and has another $100 mm worth of consignments on offer Saturday including seven cars with estimates over $5 mm. Bra bloody vo!

"The ‘changing of the guard’ or the switch of importance in the collector car world has never been so obvious!

An F50 sold for just under $5,200,000 at the new boys Broad Arrow auctions on Thursday night. Last night at Gooding we had an F40 (one of our old girls and Ex Poulter) fetch nearly $4,000,000 including buyers premium whilst at the same time old masters such as the 166 MM Le Mans Berlinetta and Bentley Blower failed to sell and the Bugatti 57S Atalante just scraped over the line.

At RM Sothebys, the sensational, important and uber rare Talbot Lago failed to fetch anymore than $6,600,000, a car that easily deserves to be in double digits.

The great pre-war and early 1950’s classics are still incredibly important and valuable but selling them at auction is not the way to go as there’s simply no longer enough volume of interest. For a car to do well at auction, you need three bidders, the buyer, the under bidder and someone when the under bidder drops out. People are amazed that a car like an F40 that was produced in big numbers (over 1,300) can fetch so much money but what they seem to forget is there’s 10’s of thousands of buyers who want one compared with some other cars which although their production numbers can sometimes only fill two hands, the number of active buyers for such is even less that that."

Arguably the greatest single day of auction sales ever held.

RM grossed $110,234,000 without at least one post block sale and for the weekend $217,057,640, a new record for any auction and off the back of 51 million dollar sales. IF they sold the F40 Comp and McLaren F1 there is little reason they won't have topped $250 mm. Elsewhere they also took out the highest sale awards with $22mm for the 410S. Is anyone left questioning the strength of the market still?

Gooding had another day of highs and more importantly lows. A word on their Bentleys, AFAIK only three Bentleys have ever topped $5 mm, the Blower at Bonhams, I remember Gooding selling the 1929 Le Mans 4.5 litre for $6.05mm in 2012 and Bonhams selling the amazing Birkin Blower for circa $7.8 mm in 2012. Further back Christies sold one of the 1930 Le Mans team Speed Six for $5.1 mm. So while it is possible to sell a Bentley for more than $5 mm, it requires a VERY special car and both the Blower and 8 Litre, as fantastic as they are, aren't all that. Now if they had a Bugatti badge they would be worth double that but they remain the worlds fastest lorries.

I’m with you. I used to be a manual absolutist but have changed my mind once I started left foot braking. I find that left foot braking adds another dimension and engagement (particularly on track) to driving that’s equally, and in some some cases more, enjoyable as using a manual transmission.

 

It may be old school, but if you learn to heal & toe, you get the best of both worlds.
