After owning my 355 for 9 years, I should know the answer but I really never paid attention. I recently had the front bumper and headlight covers resprayed. I rarely seem to drive at night but someone has told me that my headlights are backwards. On low beam only the inside bulbs light up, on high beam only the outside light up and when I flash them, they both light up? Is this normal? On most cars the outside lights are the high beams and that's how the shop put it back together. On the 355 are the outside (projector lens) bulbs the low beams? I don't want to blind anyone and want to be running the correct configuration.
In the case of twin headlamps, the low beams on European cars are the outer lamps. The US spec 355 may have it the other way around; see what the US Owner's Manual shows.
Outside is the "traditional" high beam.on US cars but Ferrari has the opposite. Looks like the shop put it reverse. Something to switch out when I get time.
Outside is not the “traditional” high beam on U.S. cars. Example, Chevy Tahoe. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Well, if we are talking about where traditionally the high and low beam headlamps were on American cars, we should look at cars, for example, like this one: Image Unavailable, Please Login Which ones are high and which ones low?
Mike posted the pic of US law without explanation. ‘1A1’ is the high beam ‘2A1’ is the low beam Most cars have inner/outer configuration (not stacked), as with the 355. The outer projector style lens is the the low beam and the inner reflector style lens is the high beam.
Note that in some countries that low beams are turned off when going to high beam. In others, all the lights come on. I don’t know if this is mandated or not. There are relay differences between US and Euro 355’s… I just can’t remember which does what.
So, I spotted this on my way to work today. A 1962 Chrysler 300. Yes, the low beam lamps are still above the high beam lamps, sort of,… What were they thinking. I guess this was the year that designers ran out of ideas…. Image Unavailable, Please Login
