I am new to the CEL lake thrown after installing aftermarket headers and sport cats. From reading as many posts on here I can it looks like I should invest in some of the big daddies minicats in order to eliminate the cel and pass nys inspection. I am curious if there is a best sequence to install and reset ecu, ie. Disconnect battery, remove sensors and place new minicats, reconnect battery.

Do I need a specific time with battery disconnected before reconnecting?

Just perform a drive cycle after reconnecting?

Any other hints as I have to try and do this to pass inspection this week….thx!

    Matt

You will need to tune out the O2 codes, otherwise, CEL will come back. 360Trev or Mase Engineering can do that for you.

So is it worth doing anything to those sensors if you are going to do the stage 1 tune anyway?

I'm not familiar with the tune stages, just the tune itself. If you're going to have your car tuned, just ask them to make sure to solve that issue for you. Don't waste your money on o2 extenders.

So I purchased big daddies, but then did get a Mase tune and am not going to install the Big Daddies

If anyone does want to go that route, brand new, in bag, 1/2 price, PM me.

Just a note on big daddy's, I installed them on my car when I installed test pipes for a short sound test. They were literally on the car for about 80 miles.
I took them off to put the stock cats back on and both were missing the little core.
I sent a very respectful inquiry to the manufacturer and literally the oddest, sarcastic and rude response from him. I emailed him back to clarify, and got an even worse response from him.

the owner is a complete tool with a terrible product in my opinion and I will never buy from him again.

    This^

I had the exact same result with a set. And when I pointed it out, with photos and details, he only got more belligerent. They are cheap so it's not hard to absorb that, but nothing says low-life like the response to critique that Big Daddy spews.

The O2 sensors are in constant torture from rapid heat cycling, extremely high heat and many pollutants. If a product is not put through these extremes during testing it absolutely cannot survive and will fail quickly.

Be extremely careful about work done to deactivate any fault codes. Not everyone does it properly. It's actually much more complicated than many tuners have an understanding of or knowledge to correct in the factory way.

Just suppressing an individual fault code alone from raising the CEL light is a very common request but not the way the factory does things. Think about how it actually all works, if you just hide the CEL it's the equivalent to putting tape over the light, digitally. Some conditionally do it for the specific light, others inadvertently hide many more faults than they should because they are either too lazy or don't have the right tools and knowledge to find the exact fault. This is quite dangerous because hiding faults you actually want to see if a sensor or actuator goes bad can be terribly dangerous in itself..

The way Bosch do things is quite a bit different to how you'd visualize all of this in your mind. For instance lets take cat monitoring as it's an easy one to describe. Just hiding the fault isn't want you need. Firstly if the cat ECU is bad you will still end up with slow down light on the dash (but no actual fault code shown!) and even worse the car can pull fuel thinking thermal breakdown and component damage from extreme heat is ongoing so your throttle pedal goes dead (and still no pending or otherwise faults logged). This is how Randy's car came to me as an example and it couldn't drive properly because the work done by his previous tuner wasn't properly considered.

On the just hiding the fault front, since cat efficiency is linked back to both primary and secondary o2 sensors (more so the difference in signal between them) if your cat efficiency CEL is just hidden what happens if your O2 sensor actually goes bad? Or wiring gets damaged or many other things. Yes you'll get other CELs and if you've just hidden them too well now your in even deeper. The software is now getting confused and doing different things which impact engine performance. You need to correctly deactivate the system in the Bosch described factory way to do it properly. In a similar way to how I documented and published elsewhere about how the factory did it on early 360s for some market segments that didn't have legal requirements for cats.

Ok I've probably lost most people by now but all I'm saying is that not all work is equal. Be careful who you let loose on your engine ECUs. I'm now onto revision 8 of my software so I'm absolutely certain I've invested more R&D time on this now than anyone's ever going to do, period.

Though you’ve explained this to me in great depth on the phone, I still read every word. I like the detail lol

Folks……please reach out to Trev and get his reprogramming. Trev is the only person who has spent the time and has the resources to rid yourself of a CEL properly. It is hands down the best “mod” you can do to a 360. If you watch Sam from Seen Through Glasses YT video on it….his reaction is not exaggerated. I had the same feeling. I’m not someone who becomes a “fanboy” or nutswings on anyone but genuinely….you will not be disappointed in the performance upgrade. Even the process with Sam (Trev’s San Fran associate) was fantastic.
