Looking to get into an F12 relatively soon. Been researching the car and the market for several months now. I really don't want to get into one without the peace of mind of a warranty. I understand ferrari offers a V12 extended warranty at around $6k a year..? But that entails a scrutinous inspection if I buy the car private, correct?

Other than getting one with a CPO warranty, is that my only option? Thanks

    Welcome to the Forum.

Your analysis of the warranty options available to you is correct. But the Ferrari warranty is not worth the paper it’s written on. You’d be better off putting the 6k warranty cost into a contingency fund which you 100% know will pay out rather than the Ferrari warranty which might not.

As an example, my contingency fund is currently sitting at 40k. The breakdowns I’ve had (neither of which were covered by warranty) were 2.5k for a fuel pump and 4k for a water pump.

Purchased my '13 F12 with a new CPO warranty. The scrutinous inspection missed nonfunctioning rpm LEDs on the steering wheel, inoperable rear camera. Subsequently, a "body control module" failed that operated the windshield wipers, seat heaters, etc. - not covered by warranty all at about $5k. It did cover the capless fuel filler that failed on the first fillup. Everything's been fine since.

Personally, I'd go with a PPI. I have no plans to extend the warranty.

Thank you all for the responses and warm welcome. I may consider this as a plan. I am curious why your pumps weren't covered under warranty?

I’d like to say ‘Because Ferrari’. But that wouldn’t be very helpful

So to elaborate (and show just how worthless the warranty is), here are the reasons for warranty refusal.

1 Fuel pump not covered because Ferrari claim I ran the tank dry (I could not possibly have done so as the car had only covered 300miles between the CPO check and the diagnosis of a faulty pump).

2 Water pump not covered because leaking gaskets and seals are not covered under warranty. Unfortunately, the seals for the water pump are not sold separately so you need to buy a new pump.

As others said, you're usually statistically better off just taking the money that would go yearly into the warranty and setting it aside in case something happens. Also recommend finding a good independent. Depending on where you're located you can go into the regional section of the forums for your region and see who others recommend.

Yes I bought a four year non-exclusive warranty. Unfortunately, nothing has went wrong with my car. lol

how unfortunate LOL I'm also curious about that company as well. But also, given the car I'm after and the situation, a warranty doesn't seem as wise as I thought.

I've read some threads on here (and tend to agree) that in general warranties are not worth the money that you pay for them. I did it for piece of mind on this car. I don't have it on the others

I'm more than willing to pay for peace of mind, but when it looks like ferrari could* play some chutes and ladders regarding a claim and still have you pay out of pocket when you really shouldn't just doesn't seem it (I'm aware many auto manufacturers operate this way). That said, given the average reliability of this car and the statistics of previous owners of things that could* go wrong and pay out of pocket for those expenses, as difficult as it might feel, I think I'll be okay rolling around without a warranty on this thing.

Probably the best summary answer on the subject yet.

There are several threads with tomes on the statistics and biases on this board. I have used both new power and extended warranties to hedge against large items.

As has been said so many things are not covered truly that it’s iffy. For example a leaking steering rack is not covered but the steering rack is ? What ?? With my warranty experience maybe half has been covered.

I would say perhaps that for Calis and FFs with high ticket items known to fail, coverage for the first year of ownership makes some sense.

Otherwise the contingency fund is the best idea as self insurance.

Congrats the F12 is an amazing ride. Search the forum for tips on this incredible car. Mind the mesh in the rears for rust or bubbling- a known problem which can be costly to repair if far enough along.

Thank you! And yes I've found more than enough info on the rear mesh and will surely be the first thing my eyes dart towards when looking at prospective cars haha
