Feeling kind of dumb, I've had my 328 for 16 years and don't know the answer to this. My owners manual is tucked away in a safe and not easily accessible.

How do you get the headlights popped up but not illuminated? I've tried various combinations of switch positions but still can't figure it out. I know it has to be possible because when I replaced my headlights years ago I don't remember them being illuminated when I made the change.

    Thanks for the help!

Pop them up and unplug the battery?

Right. You turn them on and there’s a battery cable disconnect plug under the hood behind the driver’s side headlight.

Thanks. That's probably what I did last time to replace the lights, that only takes a few minutes. But I need to have the lights up but off for a few hours for a display at a car show. I hate to have to reset the delicate clock too many times and was hoping there's another way.

To reset the clock without touching it, you could keep the battery disconnected until the clock displays the correct time, then reconnect the battery. :)

To have the headlights up without the bulbs being illuminated, without disconnecting the battery:

Pop the headlight pods up by rotating the headlight column switch.

Open the fuse box cover on the passenger's side and remove fuse No.1 - This is a 25A fuse at the far right hand side of the fuse block, for the headlight pod motors (it should be indicated on the fuse layout diagram, on the inside of the fuse box cover)

Turn the lights of via the column switch.

The headlight pods remain up without the bulbs being illuminated.

As you've probably figured out by now there is no switch, button or stalk setting to raise the headlights without them being illuminated.

Need to use the battery disconnect plug hack.

My 323 Mazda had that option it but that was a Japanese car first released in 1990.

No need to disconnect the battery - Just raise the headlight pods by rotating the column switch, pull fuse No.1 for the headlight motors, turn the lights off via the column switch, and the headlight pods stay up with no lights on.

Thanks for the tips. I've owned my 328 for 16 years and have never even looked at the fuse box.

Why start now. The stock fuse boxes can be troublesome. Unplug the battery at the disconnect switch.
