You are right about Mercedes dilemma at Abu Dhabi: "Damned if you do, damned if you don't !"

    Racing is about taking risks.

Perhaps because of his excellent upbringing : George Russell went to Wisbech Grammar School, one of the best public schools in England.

If Leclerc takes second it will be an act of God and in spite of Ferrari’s strategic performance.

Why wouldnt MB change Lewee to Softs for the jump on green? I guess 'cause Lewee couldn't take coming out of the pits behind Max? The team of course had optionality with one car soft and one medium.

Hamilton has been getting the most out of that Merc consistently the last races. Russell seems to be a little out of touch now, can't outqualify Hamilton and has to rely on safety car or Hamilton mistake to finish ahead.

Russell has a better percentage overall in the season compared to Lewis.....AND he makes better strategy calls than Lewis's strategist.

Hamilton is far from "spent", but his form is declining. Not "washed out" like Vettel, but not fiery like Alonso.

A note on SC pitting from the lead, by a team we know and love:

"Red Bull reward strategist for “brave” call to pit Verstappen
    2019 F1 season
    Posted on

18th November 2019, 10:12 | Written by Dieter Rencken and Keith Collantine

Red Bull rewarded its chief race strategist Hannah Schmitz with a trip to the podium for her “brave” decision to pit Max Verstappen during the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Team principal Christian Horner said Verstappen “trusted and accepted” the team’s call to bring him into the pits during the first Safety Car period, even though it meant handing the lead to Lewis Hamilton.

“At that point it’s like a game of chess,” said Horner. “You know, as the leader, the following car will only do the opposite. So to give away track position is quite a brave thing to do. You have to be confident that we can make a pass on-track.”

However Verstappen had already passed Hamilton earlier in the race on similar tyres. “We’d done it once with Max before and we felt that with that tyre advantage here, if he only conceded one position, he could do it again.” When the race restarted Verstappen immediately passed Hamilton again and went on to win the race.

The call to pit Verstappen was made by the team’s senior strategy engineer Hannah Schmitz, who was rewarded for the call with a trip to the podium."

She's getting a lot of recognition, and she fully deserves it! I noticed the camera was on her quite a bit these days. Her stock is rising considerably. The dynamic they have in that team is very good right now. She can make all the bold calls she likes, but they also need to have a driver to pull these strategies off (certainly they do) and the car to do it. I listen to a lot of full radio's after the race (just type in on youtube a few hours after driver name + race name + full radio and the 15 minute or so video is posted, including track position etc). The confidence Max/GP and Hannah have together is very impressive. There's no second guessing. I've only ever heard such confidence with Vettel at Red bull and Schumacher at Ferrari. The only times we hear Verstappen is pissed off these days seems to be when his engine is about to conk out.

This type of sync isn't made overnight and sadly it's missing at Ferrari, for obvious reasons.

That's fine. Just pointing out Russell has been off lately, Hamiltons getting the most from the car.
