Coming out of yesterday my practical, simplistic little brain was churning from a fan (and potentially "new" fan) standpoint - Why would this not work? I am sure there are countless reasons and a TON if real experts on here so pick this apart:

    • SC/VSC Situation Where Potentially There Are Not Enough Laps Remaining - AKA "Overtime Rule"
    • Upon the deployment of a SC/VSC the normal SC/VSC rules apply
    • Upon conditions being satisfactory to return to Green Flag/Track Clear state, but "regulation" laps are completed (53 in Monza's case) the cars must/will complete TWO (2) racing laps to conclude the race.
    • If all but one "regulation" laps have concluded the cars will complete the one regulation lap and one "overtime" lap to conclude the race.
    • If there are sufficient laps remaining to conclude the race within the regulation number of laps after the SC/VSC come in the normal regulations apply

    • Red Flag
    • Same as above except:
    • a) The cars will complete a formation lap prior to the standing start that will not count toward the remaining "normal" laps or the "overtime" laps.
    • b) If after conclusion of the formation lap the cars can complete a minimum of two racing laps within the allocated "regulation" laps then normal rules apply and the race concludes within regulation.
    • c) If there can only be one racing lap within "regulation" then there will be an additional racing lap to conclude the race.
    • d) If there are no "regulation" laps remaining after the formation lap then there will be two (2) racing laps after the standing start to conclude the race.

Fire away as to why this would not work - Cheers :)

I think it would open the race up to more gamesmanship - intentionally stopping on track by another team or affiliated car to cause the overtime rule.

How many laps does it take to return to satisfactory state. IMO, you'd need to bring back refuelling.

Cars will not have sufficient fuel to complete 2 racing laps after the regulation race distance has been attained.

Great point - But to me we have seen several races over the past few years with multiple Red Flag/formation lap/re-start scenarios and fuel never seems to be an issue/factor - and I am not aware of any fuel-saving strategies during a normal race (i.e. dial back performance to avoid running out of fuel - or ever running out of fuel even if on full-wick the entire race etc.) so I can't think that two additional laps would present a fuel issue - but great point and I could be totally wrong - Cheers :)

So how did they make it last season with multiple red flag/formation lap/restart scenarios? Just curious - not doubting your assessment at all.

If this is the case could it introduce an additional strategy data point during the race? I.E. a "Fuel management" plan to ensure enough fuel IF that scenario occurred versus "full on" fuel usage/power gambling that it won't?

Lastly - If the race end is under SC/VSC surely that would mean they are not using the same amount of fuel - so would that not allow sufficient fuel for max of two additional laps are race pace?

    Cheers :)

I think it could be a problem. Already some teams have been disqualified for being unable to provide the minimum fuel sample after a race.

Interesting - So again from a simplistic standpoint just increase the allowable amount of fuel? I realize that also changes many other dynamics of the car, tire consumption etc. so realize it is not that simple - but on its face it actually is :)

Cars are run light on fuel because weight is so critical. They target X amount of fuel to be used in the scheduled number of laps. They wouldn't add 2 laps of fuel for a what if, as the weight penalty is too much in their eyes.

All those laps after the intial green count, no?

leading to the green you get the out lap to the grid, the formation, then green. They're all accounted for.

Well the argument would simply be everyone adds enough fuel so it is fair and consistent - BUT I get that the scope of change this would entail with regard to the performance and setup of the cars would be deemed not worth it given that (thank God) there are relatively few instances where a race ends pathetically under a SC/VSC.

Appreciate all the rationale responses - precisely what I was looking/hoping for. I just think ending any F1 race - especially one as iconic as Monza - under a SC/VSC is absolutely pathetic and damages the sport.

I guess the easy argument is make sure you are always in front then whatever happens happens :) :)

I believe that the pressure to end any race under a green flag at all cost, and irrespective of the circumstances could be more damaging.

That would lead to officials taking shortcuts, and interfering with the results; we have seen that already.

No, please leave it as it is !!!

Ten laps or less sc brings out red flag
    Cars follow sc into pits
Cars return to track in order
    Rolling restart at start/finish
