Suggestions for a good Ferrari tech who can do 512BBi service at good price?

Was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a good Ferrari tech to do a belt service on a 512BBi in the LA area? Fully restored car with ~200 miles since last belt service. Need to change belts due to age. Looking for a good tech who'll do the belt service for a fair price.

For my daily life I’m as frugal as the next guy. I shop at Costco and fill up on days gas is cheapest.

On the other hand, for my Ferraris, it is different. They are not everyday things, not many have the privilege to own them, and mechanics who are familiar with them are few and far between.

Its like being a patron of the arts, unless we make it worth it to the few people who are exceptional at taking care of our cars and sourcing parts how can we continue to enjoy our passion, especially when the factory is not supporting anything but the newest models.

My jeep goes to whichever shop is closest. My Ferrari goes to the best I can find.

 

There is a wide spread between what is charged for working on Ferraris. I've seen engine out services charged 2-3 times by some more than others. Prices v

Reality is these cars, e.g., 355/TR/Boxer were from a simpler time. The daunting part removing the subframe. Once out, it's not that complicated if a person has mechanical skills. I know guys that have done these jobs themselves. May just look for a good at-home garage lift.

 

Buy a lift. Do it yourself. Piece of cake.

Sub Frame in a Boxer? With that inaccurate assumption it will be difficult to assess what prices are fair and what are not.

Are you a BB owner/end user or a car dealer/flipper?

 

Same can be said for a steak dinner. Did you actually want a good dinner or just poorly cooked steak like substance? I work on a lot of cars and run up some big bills on cars after the car was repaired at the latter place.

 

One of the best steak dinners I ever had was outside Frankfurt Kentucky. Incredible filet Mignon and not only was it the best steak I ever had, it was about the cheapest filet I'd ever purchased.

Just because you spend a lot of money does not mean you are getting premium quality nor the best. That's a false belief that smart marketers take advantage of. I remember a slogan from a retailer in NY: "An educated consumer is our best customer."

Your inference was that you repair the work of shops that have charged less money, impliedly indicating that folks are better spending more money up front rather than trying to save money with a shop that charges less. If I am mistaken, what were you trying to say?

You implied that people who save money with shops will be disappointed because they will have to go to a second shop to correct what was incorrectly done. You re implying that a shop that gives a good price quote will not be doing the work correctly. Now if I am misunderstanding you, perhaps you can clarify so there is no misunderstanding. What do you charge for a belt service on a Boxer? For a belt service on a F355? Belts, Hill engineering tensioners, accessory belts, and recharge AC? Assuming car needs nothing else and belts being changed soley for time and not miles.

 

For the "reading impaired"? So much for polite civility. "Cheap" is a term that is entirely relative. My point is very simple: I have had exceptional work done by independent shops that was far less expensive than other shops and less expensive than the several local Ferrari authorized dealers. And the independent shop I used before relocating that was very fairly priced had multiple cars at Pebble Beach, Quail, etc. Bottom line: I encourage all Ferrari owners, particularly new owners, to shop around. Don't drink the Kool-Aid that some in the Ferrari world peddle: E.g., you have to do your belts every 3 years, you have to spend $20k on a 355 service, etc.

Hello. If just doing the timing and accessory belts and tensioners, I was hoping to be in the $6k range.

 

Do you have any idea how much work that is? The parts are the cheapest of the job. I just did an engine out major service on a 512BBi for $9000.00. You should sell the Ferrari and buy yourself a nice Kia.

 

Which of my Ferraris are you suggesting I sell? The ones with rubber timing belts as opposed to the ones with timing chains? Frankly, I like them all but always on the lookout for another car from Maranello that catches my fancy.
