He’s like an American football coach: No matter how poor their performance they always seem to find work after being fired.
Lawrence Stroll should pick up Ricciardo and get rid of his son......from a business (points) point of view. Like thats ever going to happen.
Better still, daddy should sell the team to Porsche or anybody with a lick of sense on how to run a race team.
As a father, I expect Lawrence Stroll gets pleasure watching his son race for his team, and that's priceless, I guess.
Lawrence Stroll should keep his team but delegate the running. He failed to do that, but may have learnt his lesson. Enzo Ferrari himself didn't run the Scuderia.
I don't understand the Lance hate. He is pretty consistantly in the points..sure he has made some mistakes..but to be mid pack and out driving a 4 time champ most every race..well..
I certainly wouldn’t dump my own son especially for a hump like RIC. I get the Lance resentment, but he’s acquitted himself as well as many others have. I suspect Danny’s on his way to NASCAR….just like Kvyat…who finished 16th today, I think. I guess NASCAR has no problem with Ivan.
Early on, I hated that Lance was taking a seat away from a driver that really deserved it, and was sure he would be gone in no time. Even some of his radio messages, complaining about the car and being asked OK, what do you need? Only to whine back “I don’t know.” I just shook my head and thought ‘get this useless sack out of there.’ However, I have to admit. He has matured over the last couple of years, and his driving has definitely improved. I don’t ever see a WDC in his future, but I’ll admit that now I think he has earned a seat. Edit: Not implying I would take him over a Ricciardo, just saying my estimation of him has improved from useless sack of ballast to competent if not stellar racer.
Lance annoyed me initially because it seemed like could never take responsibility for mistakes... especially ones that took out another car. I think he's matured quite a bit over the years and shows that he can be quick. Ric? I don't see anything for him in F1. He can't commit to a team and appears he can no longer adapt. He ran away from Max and Red Bull, was mediocre at Renault and screwed them over by leaving for McLaren who made their biggest mistake since signing Alonso. On both, they paid them waaaaay too much. It's been funny watching Ric's change in demeanor. Here he is, getting his ass handed to him and all seems like some sort of joke to him... gotta always be the funny guy and acting as if he has some sort of guarantee. Well... it started with the "I have a contract with McLaren" commentary and now it seems the reality of his situation has finally hit home. But even still, he has this way of trying to point a finger. Just go away.
Maybe it is time to retire this thread and move the Lance comments over to his thread. Just saying...
Ricciardo didn't make $30m every year of his career. Money is one of the reasons he left Red Bull (same as Vettel). It's known Renault offered him a lot to join them, but he left after 2 years. I don't know if McLaren was so generous. I said Irvine, Barichello and Massa, because Ferrari used to pay its drivers handsomely, so over the years at the Scuderia, they could each have made a bundle as #2. Eddie Irvine is known to have become very rich within a few years, and invested his fortune in real estate. Another non-WDC who did quite well over his career is David Couthard.
Irvine was already quite wealthy before entering F1 because of his real state business although I think he made a fortune with Jaguar more than with Ferrari. Generally speaking, 2nd drivers of top teams (i.e. Coulthard, Bottas) can make a lot of money easily, but Ricciardo´s case is unusual because he made big money with two mid-pack teams. Another interesting case would be Gerhad Berger, who drove for three of the top teams of his era without winning. Johansson also drove for all the top teams, but I doubt he made much money.
Watch Legends of F1; Eddie Irvine on Youtube. In this interview in 2014, Eddie Irvine talks about his career and the real estate business he built in the Bahamas, Miami, etc ... He came from a wealthy family but made his own money. A good insighy on his career, his debuts, driving alongside Schumacher at Ferrari, later at Jaguar, etc ... Some of his comments about Schumacher will be rebuked by the tifosi, no doubt, notably his inability to set up a car that goes against common belief. Irvine is very critical of today's F1 that he finds "too manufactured" and not interesting. I found him too nonchalent when he was racing. Like he says, for him Lifestyle is the priority.
I'll watch that, but I wouldn't trust his word too much. Irvine, like Hunt and other bon vivants, was a ****. They're likeable just because we don't have to deal with them.
