It's not hating Ricciardo to mention he has been declining since he left Red Bull.
When he beat Vettel in 2014, many, including myself, thought he had a great future.
He was even touted as a future Ferrari driver by some enthusiast tifosi on this forum.
All that came to nothing: neither the 2 years at Renault, nor the time at McLaren redeem him.
The Italian GP he won was a one-off without tomorrow.
In the end, what was a promising career turns out to be lacklustre.

The praise of Lance on Sunday before his idiocy was hilarious. Ricci IS LIGHT YEARS beyond him even as a 'bad' driver you paint. Multiple wins and even a win when Lando is beating him. Sorry................he is not the end of driver road. Lance and others are. Period lol! :) A car not suiting him ruins confidence overall. They are human.........after all.

i guess all that ball juggling Ricci does in the pits doesnt amount to too much.
a car is basically a tub with suspension. maybe ricci cant do a proper setup?

The fact is that McLaren didn't want him, and the other teams were not queing up to recruit him.

You draw your own conclusion from that. Those inside F1 must know something ...

    Can you just imagine?

Commentator 1: "WOW! Lewis Hamilton around the outside with an amazing pass on Verstappen!"

Ric: "Yeah... that reminds me of a pass I made on Max in 2016. Yeah... I was coming up on him at the end of the straight... and you know... I AM THE LAST of the late brakers... a nickname I started circulating on social media under an alias... any way so yeah... oh and that reminds me that I beat Seb our first year together."
Commentator 2: So back to the race...

Ric: "Back to my race with Max?" Sure... so I almost got past Max...

I don't think anymore than you or a lot of others here.... mine just happens to be about different driver. I'm literally sick of him and the attention he gets... and/or fabricates for himself. I see a very different guy than what most people see.

ETA: I didn't start this thread... I'm just trying to keep it alive with my musings.

Okay guys, I know I have been spreading rumors that DR might be reserve driver for Mercedes.

Well, there's also this rumor.......DR will be reserve driver for RedBull.

Yep, you heard it first here on FChat.

I think that he is(or was) a better driver than we have seen in recent seasons. Not quite sure what happened but he certainly effed-up today.

    A total mystery.
This guy was indubitably quick, no doubt.
    Being wealthy perhaps ?
    I have no others explanation.

Talent limitation that 99% of drivers have, even the devastatingly quick ones.

For example, Kimi. Kimi was in the early 2000s probably the fastest driver. When they switched to Bridgestones he lost that edge. The pirelli switch was even worse.

Example 2, Vettel. Undoubtly an insanely quick driver when the machinery suited his driving style. 2014 onwards with cars having more limited downforce at the rear, made him look average, right after equaling Schumachers' most dominating season.

There's only very few drivers that have shown to adapt to cars and remain competitive. Schumacher, Alonso, Verstappen are some that spring to mind in the last 30 years. They look great in any type of car they drive, and downright extraordinary in a car that suits their driving style.

Ricciardo belongs in that list of the former...absolutely great in a car he likes, but ordinary at best in a car he dislikes. You don't lose talent like he's shown he clearly has. If he was bored, depressed, money excess problem...he'd retire before hte summer break.

and Hamilton. He has won in every era/rules spec, except the current one of course, in which he has raced. Schumacher and Alonso did not.

I think Ricciardo has lost some motivation and stopped putting all his effort in racing.
It happened when he left Red Bull after being schooled by Max. He couldn't suffer that, so he left.
Since, he stopped driving at 100%, and lived on his past reputation.
Zak Brown decision to offload him must have been a waking call for him.
To a certain extend, he follows the same path as Vettel, both coming from the same Red Bull school of hard knocks.
I don't think he will make a comeback.

If confirmed, that will be the ultimate humiliation for Danny Ric to go back to Red Bull, 4 years later, as the reserve driver.

I am even surprised he ever considered that position. He left RB in 2048 because he couldn't stand the heat in the kitchen.

He must be desperate. Marko must be rubbing his hands.

I actually thought he worked have been a better choice than Sainz at Ferrari. Happy they chose Sainz instead especially as RIC’s really un-funny clowning around has grown so tiresome.

It allows him to do other types of racing next year when he wants...he can do aussie supercars some events, endurance races, a nascar event...do all the red bull demos and so on. Not a bad deal.

And potentially a call-up to a championship-contending car if one of the drivers can't take to the grid on a given weekend. It's a long shot, but a podium in a scenario like that would go a long way towards getting him another race seat in 2024.

    All the best,
    Andrew.
