Starting to look at available cars and hoping to test-drive one for the first time before the end of the year to confirm my feelings. A few questions:

    * I’m only interested in the automatic/F1 version (not the manual). Various reviews say that the automatic mode is not as smooth as driving with the F1 mode/paddles. For those who own a 612, what’s your opinion?

    * If using a 2006 as an exemple, the marketplace (United States) shows cars that have recent work done (service with cam belts, F1 pump, leather, …) around 120-125K (asking prices). There are cars around 100K+ but they need work. Bottomline, around 120K for a car in good condition (recent fixes and service included) would be the way to go. Does that sound right?

    * Is there a backup camera on cars from that era? If not, is it possible to install a modern screen or camera that shows the car from above when backing up + images? If yes, what would you recommend (+ cost)?

    * My wife asked me (don’t laugh ;)) if there is a cup holder. What do I tell her before seeing a car in person? If no cup holder, can one be installed at a good place?

    * Any comments about what to look for when looking at cars?

    Thank you! :)

Glad I got here first, typing as fast as I can :)

*Automatic mode is fine but I never ever use it after seeing a YT tutorial. Shifts are super smooth with paddles and a little more harsh in sport mode with WOT.
F1 protects you from over revs and under revs too.

*Look at a few and drive them to get your base line. In someways better to pay less for one that needs maintenance then you can quality control it (the maintenance). I'm in UK good ones with 40,000 miles are about £65,000.

*No back up cam in 2006, can be retro fitted to different head unit.

*No cup holder in 2006, think later ones can get them.

*Things to look at, dash top shrinks, power window and mirror switches are delicate, service history, no fluid leaks, no smoke at anytime, spare key, all tools, books, no errors on screen after start up. TFT screen looks sharp, they eat ball joints and track rod ends, so any knocks on test drive can cost to fix, AC needs to work do not believe "just needs a re gas.

    Good luck with search.

My 2010 has a primitive effort at a cupholder. It appears from photos on the web that this change occurred with the 2008 model. It will hold a drink container of a specific size (236.7 mm in my car)), but don't do any hard accelerating because the container will fall backwards. The 612 has no camera, but mine has a screen display that uses a series of on-screen markers to show how close I am to objects in front of, behind, or alongside my car. These warnings are accompanied by beeps that become more rapid as I get nearer the object. When I am within one foot of the object, the beeps become a constant whine. Paddle shifting is very much fun, though leaving the tranny in auto mode works well enough for me. I always keep the car in "Sports" mode because "Comfort" mode is there just to please regulators. I would buy the latest model you can, because little improvements were being made on the fly.

Invite a passenger .... instant cup holder! A small Starbucks coffee (aka short) just fits in the little space thingy next to the F1 control. But heavy acceleration and its over. Love the cup holder above posted by 94 Tiger.

If you just drive 30miles per hour faster, you will have enough time to stop over and take a drink outside your car. And you will still be on time:)

Thank you. I’m going to start contacting a few F dealers far away from me: can I ask for their inspection report to be sent by email (not flying if I don’t already know what they found out about a car during the inspection)?

Thank you for your comments about the cup holder and the picture. Not an important item for me but…happy wife = happy life ;). In fact, we would not stop for coffee, we bought a Delonghi Automatica (automatic milk too) and she often leaves with a fantastic cup of coffee.

Some differences in the 2008-10 OTOs...

    1) F1 automatic mode: in the pre-OTOs very jerky, but in the OTO it's not bad at all. You can even shift it with your foot by lifting as you accelerate gently. Be very careful about flooring it in auto mode, as it will kick down several gears and just take off.

    2) backup camera: it was an option on the OTO. I wish I had ordered it, but the parking sensors are pretty good. Front parking sensors were an option also.

    3) cup holder-- OTO has a small one on the center console. Works fine for cups of the right size.

Just an fyi for the op, my 2006 pre OTO is not jerky at all in auto mode. It’s no nine speed Mercedes’ but not jerky either. I’ve hear they can be jerky if PIS is not set correctly.
