Could you please tell me how check the heat exchanger ? What or where look at ? My car was serviced two time by a well know French shop for belt service but nothing about the water pump. This one need to be change or just had "leak check" ?
Image Unavailable, Please Login The heat exchanger is found in the engine "V". If it looks like this, you may want to change it: Image Unavailable, Please Login Also, the rubber boots at both ends have been known to fail. Unfortunately, they are very expensive. https://www.ricambiamerica.com/145015-heat-exchanger-sleeve.html Aftermarket ones have been known to fit poorly (i.e. too loose). Anyone ever deleted the heat exchanger? I'm ok with my gearbox oil taking a couple extra minutes to warm up.
Mine looks nice but doesn't mean much at 28 years old. I thought about running the lines to an external heat exchanger. If not, also thought about making stainless transitions and connecting with straight silicone sections.
For the gearbox oil line, you could just have a line fabbed that connects outlet to inlet, super simple. For the coolant line that replaces the heat exchanger, could you just use an aluminum pipe in place of the cooler or could you get rid of the step-down rubber boots and run an even bigger pipe? Altogether seems pretty simple and a way to eliminate another source of 355 unreliability.
Brain fart, I mean that for the heat exchanger, get rid of the step-up boots and use a smaller pipe....
Yes. If you wanted to delete the heat exchanger get an 8" long 1.625 tube with bead rolled ends and straight silicone couplers.
Thanks for this -- great info. Definitely on the list for when I do the major in, uh, 5+ years from now.
I was pro active and changed my original heat exchanger - only for the brand new item to fail right away! I had to flush both systems multiple times. The OEM one is back in and 3 years on still going well. I don’t trust the new heat exchangers now given my previous experience - might have been a bad batch or just bad luck. Deleting it entirely seems an option.
