For once, Hamilton's moaning wasn't BS. Mercedes strenght is tyre conservation but they're not playing with it, it seems that they try to win by sheer speed, something they have no more. They should have tried going long with the hards and changing to softs for a quick short stint at the end, at least in Russell's car. The degradation was lower than expected and anyway, Russell had nothing to loose.

I don’t believe it would have worked.
To my modest opinion their only chance was to do the same strategy with Red Bull and :
1/ Trying to overtake Max during the start with better grip.
2/If not stay closer to him on pure pace and trying to put pressure with the first pit stop.

Fact is tyre wear wasn’t a problem during the race.
Hard tyres were useless.

 

At least the 499P looks promising, maybe he'll give us something to cheer next year!

You're right. I turned on the race hoping something would happen. In hindsight, mowing the grass a second time would have been more exciting.

The F1 website pre-race strategy article said that a Soft-medium-medium tire strategy would be fastest, and that Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes, and even Haas all had the tires to do it. They were wrong I guess! This article also said the Hards would be no good at all, so I was surprised to see teams trying them, although with so many variables (temperature, cloud cover, chance of rain, chance of safety car, etc) you've got to gamble once in a while.

For Ferrari to turn down the engine due to heat/altitude concerns....if true, then I'd rather see the engine blow up turning it up and going for the win, but OK, I guess they are playing defense to hold on to 2nd in the Constructors.

Although I criticize Stroll, he does have a habit of moving up a lot on the first lap, from 20th to 15th yesterday, but I don't think he did anything after that.

I don't think it would've made them win the race, but I don't understand Mercedes' strategy at all here. Obviously the team and drivers all agreed to do what they did beforehand (start mediums, move to hard), but there was just no reaction to circumstance from them. I kinda get why they didn't go longer with Lewis on the mediums as Max was closing in fast, and their own strategy was already being shot to bits by Max going longer than expected. Fine. But Russell clearly had life left in his mediums, as @DeSoto says, absolutely nothing to lose with Ferrari that far back...why not let Russell do what he wants and ignore the Hard tyre, take the mediums a while longer (realistically only needed to take them to lap 40) and then switch to Soft...if it didn't work, he'd still be 4th.

Frankly speaking, for the ''my team never makes any mistakes'' they've shown quite the opposite. This wasn't strategy.

Max said the moment he knew Lewis switched to Hard he had it in the bag as those tyres where awful. Just like Hungary.

Then more reason to avoid the hard tyre and go straight to the soft. Also staying out longer you have more chances of pitting under safety car.

I think probably they wouldn't have won anyway, but if you're not faster and do the same strategy, you can bet you're not going to win. Of course, back then nobody was sure the medium tyres would last till the end, so playing it safe with Hamilton to keep the 2nd place was not a bad idea, IMO. But with Russell they could have pressured Pérez, specially as he seemed to struggle more in the end than Verstappen.

Bottas wasn't able to get around Alonso, who was backing up the parade for many laps, leaving a huge gap behind the Ferraris, who themselves lost touch with the leading four.

With too many cars in the parade running together, passing opportunities were just not to be found while the tires were at all fresh.

Ricardo's lunge was likely born of pure frustration.

 

Don't be so angry against Max..
First year Max has a dominant car he will explode all the stats.
Lewis needed seven years of a dominant machine to score 11 wins in 2014 and more points scored in one season in 2020.
In fact Lewis was very lucky Red bull chose the teenager Max in 2014 instead of Mercedes because he would have had very difficult time from 2017 with a growing Max believe me ..

 

Not angry against Max. Just pointing out that Max is doing the same thing as Lewis was doing and all a sudden Max is getting the praise not much the car. I'm just calling all you guys out.
Also Lewis has done so many things that Max has'nt, I won't bother to go into it.
