Lusso exhaust on an FF?

So contrary to what most people seem to want to do, I'd like to quieten down my FF's exhaust.

I use the car as a daily and as such have to deal with the reality of traffic. This is the only time I find the wonderful exhaust note of the FF tiresome (sat in traffic and creeping) and is something that got me thinking.

Having had a look on the parts diagram at both cars, they look remarkably similar. Ferrari have previous for not having to redesign stuff if possible and it makes sense for a small scale manufacturer

This has got me thinking, with the complaints of many that the Lusso exhaust was too quiet, this might be just what I want on the FF. The main question being are they interchangeable?

Do I need lots/all of the system or was the reduction in exhaust sound created mainly by the rear silencers and I could swap them over only onto the rest of the FF exhaust?

Even if they were compatible would it make a blind bit of difference?

I'm sure I could pick up a relatively good condition used system from someone in the UK that's installed a sports option of some variety...

All thoughts welcome.

 

I am not sure the exhaust are actually different, in a way they make a different sound. I think it's more to do with the cabin sound proofing.

 

For what it is worth, I put a Lusso Kiline Inconel on my FF, i'd imagine it could go the other way.

I've already done a little soundproofing and it did make a difference, maybe I should investigate extending that first before tinkering with the exhaust.

A friend of a friend has a Lusso V12 and has fitted Novitec back boxes and X pipe. bizarrely at tickover/low revs (under which the valves open) the exhaust note is substantially quieter than my standard FF. It's very loud once the valves open.

It's this I'm trying create, just quieten it down when sat in traffic, creeping and rolling around at sub 30mph. That's the part of the car I find very tiring, draining almost. So strangely the solution for me might actually involve and aftermarket exhaust. I like the standard exhaust note in every other respect other than the drone that's created just as pick up power to creep forward when at a standstill.

We're starting to come round to the idea that an aftermarket exhaust might actually solve the problem.

Before I start changing stuff though I still need to find someone local to me that has a standard FF so we can do a back to back comparison.

I just want to make sure mine is completely standard before I start swapping stuff out.

 

save your money. just put in the "removable muffler tip silencer" at the exhaust tip that is opened when the valve is closed. it'll quieten it down significantly. It'll also restrict flow but as long as your exhaust valve is working, the other opening should be sufficient for WOT

 

Fwiw, every person I’ve seen that had exhaust drone on the stock exhaust also experienced the same drone after going aftermarket.

Not something I'd ever heard of but I'll take a look.

 

I installed novitec back boxes and x pipe on my FF and I can confirm that it is quieter than the stock exhaust when the valves are closed. You also want a Forza valve controller to have full control of the valves. This unit has three settings: always closed, car controlled and always open. You may have noticed that the valves sometimes open when you wouldn't expect it, like on downshifts, even when revs are well under 3000. Also if you tap the accelerator pedal too quick, even when travelling slowly and again, well under 3000, they'll open. For these scenarios, the always closed setting is great. Just don't ever use that setting when pressing on.

 

or you can accomplish this with a reprogrammed novitec ecu and control via manettino, which is what i did.

 

I dismissed the novitec ECU as the distributor here in the UK said it only had two settings, car controlled and always open. I wanted that third option always closed to which I was told novitec wouldn't do that. Can you confirm whether or not it has an always closed option?

 

thats correct. i have no need for always closed as that's fully controllable via the throttle. i wld have liked closed on startup, but thats mechanically impossible.

Yes I do get the episodes where you get unexpected valve opening and you suddenly get a momentary loud bark from the exhaust when driving in traffic.

 

These cars are all about the V12 and you want to quiet it down? I have Ryft race pipe + Capristo X-Pipe with Capristo Valve Controller into stock mufflers. The throttle is basically a volume switch. Take off nicely and it's not loud at all. Even idle is not bad. Cold start is ruthless and on throttle is ruthless but if just doing simple commute keep the RPMs under 4000 and light throttle and she purrs down the street. Even highway speeds easily can roll windows up, turn on the A/C, and have a conversation with your passenger without drone. If don't want noise get a Tesla to commute. That's my commuter...complete yin/yang combo lol.

 

Seems to me you are more concerned with how things sound inside the cabin vs the exhaust sound that others hear. There is a member who reported much success with addressing what he deemed a droning exhaust sound on his FF by going with increased sound deadening material- I believe he used Dynomat. It seems to me this would be the preferable way to go if the concern is inside the cabin refinement.

This is my daily, Even if it wasn't the traffic in the UK is such that whenever or wherever I go I end up sitting in traffic to some degree.

I simply want the droning gone/reduced when I'm sat in traffic, it is simply draining. I'm very happy with how the car sounds the rest of the time and I'm really not interested in buying a Tesla becuase the Ferrari I bought has an uncomfortable drone in a specific rev range when sat in traffic.

I'll figure out a solution. When I do find it I'll post details. There's a very solid reason when the Lusso was modified to remove this problem.

 

Yep that's me, the Dynamat certainly helped but it hasn't solved the issue yet.

Cabin refinement at standstill/heavy traffic is all I'm seeking.

 

Don’t install the Forza controller.

There is a reason that Ferrari dealers will fit the Capristo and not the Forza and that’s because the always closed option will build damaging over pressure in the engine if you rev the it and forget that you’ve left the valves closed.

 

you can simply install the forza and not have closed all the time as an option no?

 

Just for clarity's sake, Novitec have completely discontinued their ECU reprogramming.

They now only offer the Switchtronic (car controlled/always open) and Tectronic (OBD CEL unit)

Forza will allow you to close at all times, but note their disclaimer regarding potential for damage if left closed in high load situations.

Why bother with one more potential point of screw up. All you need is someone to mess around with the valve setting unbeknownst to you (a mechanic, let’s say) and you’re on the path to engine damage. Why take the risk for something that simply isn’t needed?

 

Sorry, what are you referring to? I have no setting for valves closes all the time.
