I’ve worked on many of these Rangies back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s before I started working underground and I still have nightmares about them.

It's the electrics/computers that foik up what had been a superior offroader.

As noted here,I've had 4 of,3x 'classic' and a 38.

The 2 earlier classics were shoiters but mechanically great.
Many 4wd drives including our CREB track many times.
They towed TT cars to Melbourne with a starter motor failing on one in Clermont and that was it.
The other classic was a honey that I'd done some mods on,rented it out to a mature bloke..he came back and offered silly dosh so I sold it!
The 38 I sold to a local butcher with a fresh 4.6 after using it as a family car for a bit....no probs for me but plenty of stick from various mechanics here.

 

Yeah that’s pretty much what everyone has said. The basics on this model are pretty sound - it’s the electrics you have to worry about.

Everything works on this one except the cruise control which I don’t care about.
It drives well, as you’d expect given it’s only done 130k in 21 years.
I’ve also been told that the 4 litre has far less issues than the later 4.6.

It’s at the mechanics now, so fingers crossed.

I think they were still a BMW sunroof at that point so parts should have been easy to find.

As I said earlier, if it has made it to now, in the condition it is in, it should be good for you. I look forward to hearing great reports of its travels. Mind you, some of the nicest places I have discovered have been while waiting for a tow truck for a Rangie! Best of luck mate.

My mechanic's top of the range loaner.
This takes me back to my jackeroo days when we had a 47 as our weed sprayer,it had a 2f that would flood if you went over a 2" bump!
This has a 2H with steer and isn't tooo bad to drive.
